Studded tires and chains are illegal in some states. I'd say that you only need either of those if you live in, or near, the mountains. A good set of winter tires will do the trick for most people.

I have studded snows on my truck. They work great in the packed snow and ice but they are noisy as heck on a dry road and reduce traction slightly on dry and wet roads. My other cars have studless snows and are almost as good traction wise and far quieter.

You probably won't need chains in Lafayette. Doesn't it only get icy when Purdue loses.

I've driven on glare ice with my Blizzaks and they're fine.

I've got some chains that I've never used if somebody wants 'em. Bought 'em for my 350 and we never had bad weather after I bought them.
