Default "New" car with 700 miles..am I getting the shaft?

Hey all,

Got my Z a few weeks ago. May know me from my other thread, which outlines how I have already put a nice dent in it.

Anyway, something that has been constantly biting at the back of my mind is that the car was delivered to me with 700 or so miles on it. It was hastily procured from a dealer north of Atlanta and driven to Florida, not transported on the back of a truck.

1) Has anyone else paid for a "new" car but gotten a car with this many miles? The day I signed on the dotted line the "dude" told me that the car wouldn't have more than 20 miles on it--"our driver would turn around and leave without it." I was already asking because I know people tend to "rev things out" on test drives and wanted something with almost no miles..like, <5, actually.

Problem is, my paperwork states it arrived with 290. You can Google Map it, but Sutherlin of Buford, GA is a lot farther than that from Harbor in Port Charlotte, FL. Before the car came, I got a verbal that my warranty would be 36k + what the car was delivered with (e.g., 36,700). The day the car came, I got a "sorry, we cant do anything about that..the max we can say it came with is 290." So I've been backl and forth with a different guy at the dealership lately, the best professional I've dealt with so far. I talked to him about this last week (had to go back in for dent repair; was delivered with pass. door ding) and he confirmed that my warranty began at what the car was delivered with from 0. Yesterday while at work, he called and said he was just "checking in to see how the car was." I told him what I thought of it so far and then brought up the mileage thing--"my paperwork still says 290." When just last week he told me my warranty started @ delivery miles, he couldnt remember what I was talking about. He said he'd look into it and call me back. Haven't heard back yet.

What do ya'll think? Am I being too picky and/or demanding? I think I should have paid used car kbb value instead of invoice + $400 for a car with 700 miles...and now they're making it seem as though i have eaten 410mi (paperwork says 290 and this is where i believe they started me) of my warranty's terms before I ever even saw the car. Car still only has 1.2k! They drove it more than I've driven it so far!

You should of never taken delivery of the car. You should of refused to pay invoice + 400. You could of gotten the car for invoice or less with less than 5 miles. You probably could of gotten another 2000 or more taken off considering it was given to you with so many miles.

I don't know what else to tell you, maybe one of the sponsored dealers on here can tell you what to do.

I would have never accepted delivery of a new car with 700 miles on it. Unfortunately, I don't think there is really anything you can do at this point.

If you didn't like the way the deal was going with the car, why'd you spend the money on it?

700 miles are extreme.
I have taken delivery of a new car before, a luxury car actually, with couple hundred miles on it because I wanted to car and asked them to get it ASAP. The dealer sent a couple of guys to drive the car back from nearby city.

However, even if the car hasn't been titled before, I would consider it used at 700 miles. I don't want to add to your insecurities, but at that point I would have demanded to knock off $3000 or so. The dealer would have never sold the car "as new" with 700 miles on it.

Could care less about what the odometer reads..when I signed on the dotted line the car probably had 5 miles but was then driven across the Southeast..what my primary concern is relates to those miles from them driving it having eaten into my warranty...I think I should have 36,700, don't you?

Stearnsy, How many miles per year are you going to put on the car? If you think you will put more than 12k a year, then perhaps you can fight with Nissan about the warranty. Otherwise, you'll be stressing over the principle for no reason.

I have purchased new cars with dealer-trade miles on them. But usually this is in the order of 50-100. Maybe I missed this in your post, but did the Z they delivered to you get a lot of demo use at the original dealership?

I'd push for a couple of free oil changes for your troubles.

More then likely nothing is going to happen to the car but 700 miles is not a brand new car anymore. You should have been able to get some money off for the unexplained miles. Is it common for dealers to drive cars from city to city or even state to state. I remember when I purchased my 08 Altima 3.5SE Sedan 6spd the only dealer who had that combo in white was in Massachusetts and I'm in NY. If my dealer would have said "Ok we will drive up there and drive it back" I would have said hell no, but they ended up going up there in the dealer flat bed and hauled it back to NY, that seems like the only logical thing to do.

The car I just purchased was a 2009 with 1300mi on the odo. Got it for a nice used price. No way you should pay for that like it was new, but don't sweat it. It's all said and done, just enjoy the vehicle.

Mine was a dealer transfer from N.C. to ATL. and it had 200 on it when I picked it up.

But if it had 700 I probably would drive it off a cliff.

Agreed.

But I also agree with OP. 700 miles is a lot. Thats either a lot of hard test drives or some dealer salesmonkey or car wash jockey took it for a weekend to impress the lady.

Just enjoy the car. In 30,000 miles you wont even think about that 700.
