from my understanding of the article it seems like a lot of the proposed solutions on this thread wont prevent people stealing the car. it seems like what they're doing is tricking the key into thinking the car is nearby (hence the guy within 8 meters) the key then sends out the unlock/ignition verification which is then transmitted to a wireless transmitter which fools the car into thinking the key is right there and starts the ignition.

Locks only prevent the small time thieves. The more "professional" ones will get by locks no matter how fanscy they are.
Most thieves like the "soft target". Protect your stuff by making your car harder to steal than the next guy's.

so someone manages to steal the car by relaying the fob signal...what happens when they need to restart the car later? Do they just have that original signal stored and re-broadcast it?
If so, it seems like an intermediate fix would be to program fobs with rotating coded signals. This may deter some would-be thiefs if they know they can only start the car once. But maybe they wouldnt care if they are just taking it to a chop shop. |

They aren't concerned about restarting your car when it's sitting on the chop shop floor in a million pieces.

Considering the trouble I think theives will concentrate on stealing your wheels than the entire car. Pretty soon all cars will have gps and it im sure it will be easier to trace the car ....let alone be able to get status info online in realtime.
