soft shifter?

HI,

I have about 3700 miles on the car...

today I drove it after 3 days... and I felt the shifter being softer than normal...

I always thought that it was harder to shift... just talking about the shifter not the clutch...

Is this normal? for the shifter to get loose after some x000 miles? (broken in?)

Or does this mean something is going on w/ the shifter that I need to get checked?

I used to really like how the shifter was hard...

Thanks,
Jay

not sure wat's going on with your car but sounds like you were lifting weights the last 3days. :D

the gearbox does break-in after about 8-10k miles but not sure if it's THAT detectable.

Mine feels softer going from the nuetral position to first/second side than the 5/6 side... I'm attributing it to 'break in'

Mine certainly became softer after 3-4k miles. I am at 6k and it is still getting a little softer. Quite effortless to enter gears most times. I am hoping this is normal and attributing this to break-in :ugh2:

as long as it doesn't pop out of gear while coasting, etc you're fine.

i am glad its just not me .....

I just read the manual. No where does it state that we will be required to administer shifter viagra after 7-8k miles.

Phew! Imagine the embarrassment of asking for THAT at the pharmacy. Or auto parts store. Or dealership where that cute Service Advisor works.

Was the car cold or at running temp?

Sometimes when my car isn't fully warmed up the shifter is harder than normal. Once the gearbox fluid heats up it's very smooth.

My car as 16,xxx miles on it as of today.

on colder days (30F range) the Z's tranny is kinda stubborn. my G's gearbox is even worse until the tranny oil is warmed up.

my Honda's gearbox is no issue even at 0F... :icon14:

The gearbox in my old RSX and other K20 trans cars have the same issue as my Z. It really depends on what kind of fluid you use, but most high performance gear boxes will act like that due to all of the close tolerances.

Yes. I'd have no problem telling the male SA that I had a soft shifter :icon17:

both... even when the car had just started and after about 30 mins or running also...

the temp's have been around 30-40 F but that has been the same for a couple months now...

I'm sure the shifter will wear in some and the play will get worse with age and mileage. However, like I said, by car has 16k miles on it and I think it feels great.

Coming from an STi... it's MUCH smoother. Although I did like the bolt-action feel of the Subaru gearbox.
