alarm for z viper 5902

im looking into getting the 5902 with tilt sensor. a shop quoted me $570 for install with lifetime warranty. What are somethings i need check out before letting them do it. they installed an amp, sub, and tints in my old altima and i never had any problems. Any questions i should ask to make sure the install if going to be done right. i read in a thread after the install make sure all your windows work. just want to know if there is anything else i should know before i hand my car over to them. main reason for the alarm is i don't want my rims to get stolen(have wheel locks) had an altima with g37 rims and they broke of one of my wheel locks while i was parked. just want a little more security but dont want to mess my car up because of install. any recommendation on another alarm or shop i live in ozone park ny would be appreciated to. thanks.

On the Toyota Tundra X-SP, which is the vehicle I had before my Z, I had the viper 5901. It was absolutely amazing. I loved that thing. I would agree that it is best to check the windows, especially since the windows roll up completely when you shut the door. The tilt sensor was a great feature that I had and it gave me a sense of security apart from the actual alarm itself. Also, you can buy the automatic window relay to go along with the remote, but honestly I wish I could go back and not waste all that money. I mean yes its cool, and everybody loves it, it just isn't that practical. The range on these things is supposedly a mile, I don't want my windows down on my Z with me a mile a way, because there has been a few times when I accidentally hit the button on mine.

In my tundra, if I remote started my truck and then decided to turn it off, my lights would stay on unless I opened the driver door. So a few times my battery died from accidentally hitting the button and not knowing about the lights being on(the alarm has a feature to make the vehicle go off after so many minutes of being remotely started), so that is something you will need to be careful with. Basically just be careful about mashing buttons without knowing it and you will be fine. I loved my 5901 which is very similar to the 5902, and if you don't have a garage the remote start will come in very handy in the winter!

how much they quoting you for the actual unit?

im89 01-05-2011 01:50 PM

they never gave me a quote for the actual unit they said thats the price with install. they ask me if i had the 5902 i told them no they said ok $500. Then i asked about their warranty and they said lifetime.

thats a good deal. they must not be charging you much for labor. the unit is around 500 dollars if i remember correctly.

Well I want to get the tilt sensor so it's an extra 70 I have to call and make sure it's not a refurbished alarm their putting in though.

dudafunk 01-05-2011 03:13 PM

I've done some research on getting the 5901.. (not 5902), its available online for $200.. I'm in NY too and have visited two major shops here, I was quoted $700+ (and they wanted me to buy the product through them yada yada) for the 5901 with a tilt sensor and a glass break sensor. (The sensors go for about $60 each)

So it comes to $320 in parts for me... so yeah I said no to their quote of $700+ straight up

Your $500 quote means just $250 in labor, which is reasonable. I wouldn't mind doing it together with you maybe...

BUT my greater concern is, these shops they all just say yeah we can do it yeah we can do it... I'm more interested in looking for independent installers who I have proof, that they've worked on a 370z before... putting it back the way you took it apart can be a pain... I insisted the shop would let me watch the entire install and they were okay with that though, because I want to know for sure they're not gonna cut corners.

I know, I know, the "shops" have worked on cars more expensive than a 370z, I just don't want mine to be a scapegoat for their first experiments. Or maybe I do if someone can convince me otherwise.

That being said, if there's anyone who can prove they've successfully done the Viper install on the 370z, talk to me I will get it done from you. (Matt you listening... I wish you knew these!)

dudafunk 01-05-2011 03:15 PM

Oh I forgot to add the cost for the immobilizer.. bottomline, the $500 or so is a great quote... I'm more worried about experience.

dudafunk 01-05-2011 03:22 PM

PS: Why are you interested in the 5902 over the 5901? (Is there more difference to them besides the colored LCD display?)

im89 01-05-2011 04:03 PM

the honest answer is everywhere i ask they are saying the 5901 is going to be 100 less than the 5902, this place is willing to do the 5901 for 400 so i thought if im going to have this alarm in for a while get the nice lcd display!...i know nothing about alarms..just want the security and want it done right...im pretty sure they'll let me watch the install. i got my tints, amp and sub put in their for my altima and was with them during the whole installation mind you i had very little knowledge of what they were doing but i still wanted to watch. i never had any problems with my amp. As for how good they are at install im not sure yet. i know they do some good audio work being i never had problem with my amp or sub. But i think an alarm could be a little more difficult. Im pretty sure they will honor there lifetime warranty with the alarm if anything goes wrong because i didnt like my back tint came back about 4 month later and re-did it for free.

i had mine done at Long Island Sounds. so he knows his way around the Z. i had the smart start done too. the phone app thing.

im89 01-05-2011 04:47 PM

I'll check them out I just want it done right. But not trying to spend over 1000 for it. I was planning to put it in asap but I might get a winter setup instead not sure yet been driving around on summers and a forum member might sell his set. Have a garage so not as concerned as some people with the alarm but still want it.

Jeff, can you link me to their site/contact info?
What exactly did you get (which exact model, what all sensors if any), and if you don't mind sharing your quote..

im89 01-06-2011 09:06 AM

what kind of by pass is needed for our alarm? i was talking to this guy who works at the dealership and might install it for me on the side. He said i need a bypass for the alarm. He said he does not recommend universal kits either. Is there a specific kit for us?

I know who you are talking about, and that winter setup is a great deal. those tires new, alone cost 950. i have the same setup and its amazing. works great in snow and a million times better in the cold then the summer tires.

I got the viper 3303, the viper smart system (the phone thing), the tilt sensor, and glass break sensor. the system does NOT include remote start. i think it was around a thousand dollars installed (i think closer to 1100), a little more i believe. would have been like 1400 ish if i got the 5901 (which has remote start) because if the addional labor required to do the remote start. however, i can honestly say i regret not getting remote start. Had my wheels not just gotten stolen and had to shell out 500 bucks for the deductible, i probably would have gotten it.
here is the google maps for the place. he had my car done same day.

Hi Jeff,

I visited LI Sounds today and unfortunately we weren't able to cut out a deal. I showed him the following prices I found online:

- Viper 5901: $215 + Tax (Free shipping on Amazon prime)
- XK07 CAN Bus Immobilizer: $37 + Tax + Shipping (im89, thats what you need.. but the place I'm getting it done from is going to use the "Audiovox FLCAN Multi-Platform Canbus Enabled Doorlock Interface" but I figure they do the same thing)
- Glass Sensor DEI 506t: $20 + Tax + Shipping
- Tilt Sensor 507M: $27 + Tax (Free shipping on Amazon prime)

Based on all the research I've done extensively on this forum, labor prices for the install have been varying between $200-250 (best deals I saw) to anything more than that.

So my offer was about $650 and tax if you add up those numbers. He quoted me $700 and I was reluctantly agreeing when suddenly he said no to even the $700 after looking at some of his paper work claiming the $650 wouldn't produce enough profit. I wanted to get it done from him because he's worked on a 370z before. Anyway, I headed to Soundtrax in Centereach and setup an appointment for a few days from now, it came to $700 out the door with tax for the 5901 with tilt and glass sensors. I've also ordered the battery backup for some $25-30 separately, I forgot I wanted that too. I'm assuming he'll throw it in during the install at no extra cost, and if that ends up being the case, OP, my cost is coming to $730.

The shop is clearly still making a $300 on the labor if you do the math, I don't know why LI Sounds felt this wasn't enough if similar shops in NY could take it. Anyway, thanks Jeff! Soundtrax is old and big and everything too, but I believe they haven't done a 370z Viper installation before.. I'm going to cross my fingers and go ahead for my appointment and post up some pictures hopefully.

looks like i spent way more than i needed to on mine i guess haha, but oh well, i dont regret the peace of mind of having my alarm for past 7 months, and i'm sure you will love it.

i know they worked on my car for like 5 hours i believe. maybe the other shop. don't know how involved it is? i mean, its an alarm, it's either done right or its not, and i'm sure where you go is good enough to do it right. so kudos to you for getting a good deal, saving money is always good :)

those sensor prices are like, insane too, but thats prett cool that you were able to get them that cheap. i was kind of up against a wall in terms of a time frame because my car had just had the wheels stolen and i didn't want it happening again the next night i had it back.

anyways, so you are getting the following?
viper 5901 (does this come with remote start?)
glass break sensor
tilt sensor
immobilizer

That it?

FYI, if you want a trunk open button on your remote, its something the shop can do. if i hold down the aux button on my viper remote, my trunk pops, so your shop should be able to do to the same. also make sure that you check that your windows work properly after the install. like, auto up/down, partial up down, and make sure both windows raise and lower the 1/4 inch when you open/close the door.

dudafunk 01-10-2011 10:39 AM

Yeah he mentioned you had the wheels stolen and wanted something "today", so that was a little hint that you'd pay anything... I've been in that spot (with my window tints HAHAHA I got ripped).. AND with buying a used car because I had an exgirlfriend fly in the next day, and ripped again!!!

I think for the trunk pop, there's an extra piece of hardware you need to buy too:

Viper - Trunk Release Solenoid

Yes the 5901 has remote start too... and yeah am getting the tillt and glass sensor (And battery backup that I have ordered separate)

dudafunk 02-04-2011 11:28 AM

Hi there,

So things went well, I got the trunk release thing too. I have one issue though:

When I remote start from "far" away.. the alarm goes off saying trunk open :-/
When I remote start from "not too far" away (which is 90% of the times, say from home or work), all works well.

Do you get that too? I figure maybe due to the distance, not all the replies come back on time or something?

I tested the tilt sensor by jacking the car up, it works great. Tested the glass break sensor by jingling keys, works well. Tested the backup battery by unplugging main, works great too.

What about the "sensitivity" of the shock sensor..its set to default... did you get any false alarms yet? Or maybe it should be made more sensitive.. have u played with that?
