Black Ice
Was heading home from some holiday shopping as I knew we had potential for freezing rain. Roads seemed fine, but as I came over the crest of a small hill that was exposed to the wind, my car suddenly broke loose and started heading towards the curb, corrected and got enough traction and car went left, still sliding, into the opposite lane. Could see headlights ahead, corrected, started sliding right towards the curb again (all the while seeming to pick up momentum as i started down the hill), once again corrected and back into the on coming lane. Finally caught traction and got it under control in time to get back in my lane.
I have been driving a long time and have a lot of snow experience, but I have never gotten that out of control so suddenly. I was literally at the point where I knew I wasn't going to be able to save it anymore when it finally got some traction. Man, what a ride. Moral, DO NOT go out when it might freeze! |

Been there, done that with black ice. Don't care for it. Good thing you got her back under control.

Nice to hear you were able to correct without much fuss! Black ice is the worst mostly because you cannot predict it and many times cannot see it before you are on it. I spun out once with my Saab due to black ice and no matter how much I tried to correct it, I had zero traction so it was in vain.

Good job keeping it together.
Between Santa Rosa and Eureka on Hwy 101 it can be quite hazardous as well. Black ice is very difficult to spot and I have found myself all the way across into oncoming lanes a few times. Oldtimers in those parts will tell you to look for sparkling roadway in the headlights -- but this is not 100%.

On my way to the office this morning I saw 3 cars spun out within about 1/4 mile of each other. I chalked it up to black ice.
I was changing lanes at one point, passing a semi, and the back end of my jeep got squirrly. Luckily I was able to catch it.
