MotorTrend: Genesis vs. Mustang GT vs. 370z

I know there's a drag race video of this group in the Photos/Media section. But here's the full text article: Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track: Mustang Fighter or Cut-price Nissan

The 370Z went from 0-60 in 4.7 seconds? What? I thought they weren't even close to this number? I thought it's been said it was more 5.3 or so? Wow? What?

While the acceleration is impressive, what's even more impressive is the insane 1.02g lateral! Good lord.

The other thing I like about this review is the test car is a Touring model. Which shows any added weight in this trim hasn't hurt the Z's performance.

Go figure why MotorTrend picked the Mustang GT over the Z. That the Hyundai would lose was almost a given.

We have to accept the fact that:
1) Genesis offers the best performance/price ratio. I think it is every bit as good as the original 350Z (power and smoothness with 3.8L V6 goodness), but at a much lower price point. It also adds a backseat for a bit more practicality.
2) Mustang offers much more flexibility with it's backseat, quieter ride, and a vicious sounding V8 and torque the other two lack.

IMO, the Z has always had a unique driving characteristic. Between the Z and Mustang, it comes down to the driver. The same can be said about the S2000 and Z years ago. I think it'll be fun to see the Mustang and Genesis take part in Best Motoring races.

I'd say the Genesis coupe is almost an identical match for the old G35 if it holds up as well. That's an impressive accomplishment in my book.

The Genesis got spanked on the drag.
$30,250 for a Track Model Genesis?
And I still don't think it should be compared to the Z. The Z clearly out classes the Genesis.
As far as the Mustang goes, Ford needs to go back to the drawing boards. If the quality is anywhere near last years model then Ford fails.
That's just my opinion.

Seriously, I don't see how anyone would buy a track Genesis at that price if they want added performance... For that you might as well get the Z.

I also agree with the Mustang. I have a girl cousin that has a current generation Mustang GT that she claims is pushing almost 400 HP with the mods that she's installed on it (I doubt it). Cold Air Intake and a really nice looking exhaust, all tuned. The car sounds dope fresh. She's also got some aftermarket rims and racing slicks.

That being said, I haven't told her anything because it's a very nice car, but it's a boat on wheels. Heavy car with a big compensating motor with shot gas mileage. It doesn't make sense to me. Americans need to let go of the past. Camaro, Challenger, Mustang... let it go. Bring it to the future. The formula for the 70s doesn't work anymore.

Sorry for that little rant.

Ya, a couple of weeks ago I was in Cali and rented a 2008 Mustang V6. That was the first time I drove one and was excited because I always thought the retro design was cool. To say I was dissapointed was a huge understatement. For a V6 there seemed to be decent power but the car was a boat. The build quality was just not there. Cheap plastic everywhere inside the interior and lots of road noise from the tires. Heck, my daily driver work truck 2000 Ford Ranger handles better and it has a 3" lift on it. And less road noise. I rent quite a few cars thru out the year when I travel and over the last 7 years that has been the most dissapointing car I have driven.

dont get me wrong i love the z but i was kind of hoping the genesis was going do a little bit better than that. I was down right disapointed.

They kept complaining about hanging revs the entire time for the 2.0t and 3.8 article, i wonder exactly what they ment.

I agree there is no comparison.

I think any real car enthusiast would take the turbo 4 genesis over the V6. It will almost surely end up with more aftermarket support than the V6. It has the same block as the EVO, so it should be a pretty good platform to start with.

Not to mention, you can get the 4 cylinder track model for about $26,000. Hard to beat that.

I didnt read the article but if what I read here is understood... the Mustang GT outran the Z? I find that hard to believe considering they come stock with less HP and are MUCH heavier.
