RPM/Speedometer gauge goes below 0!
 

Hi guys,

Any ideas on why both the speedometer and RPM dial goes below 0 even when I'm going anywhere from 0-70 MPH? I don't abuse the car and it only has 4000 miles on it (2009, auto).

Also, any ideas where I can get Redline synthetic 5w-30 oil on the cheap?

The speedometer and the tacometer both read off a CAN-bus connection. Either there is a can-bus error or bad connection behind the dash. If it is a full can-bus failure then the same thing should happen to a reader plugged into the OBD-II port.

does the speedometer move at all? you could've blown the fuse to the meter...i know ive done it

the speedometer moves, its just not accurate..if i go 70, it reads 20 hah

its not something that the dealer cant fix in a week or so right? i hope it doesnt mean some serious failures are imminent

Should be an easy fix for a dealership, worse might be they have to wait for a part.

any advice on where to get some cheap Redline oil?

So this sounds somewhat similar to my situation. Once it gets cold out and my car sits over night outside the next morning when I turn it on the speedometer won't sweep the guage and sits pointing straight down. So if I leave it be it will read inaccurately just like you said. Weird thing is if I notice this before I pull away simply turning the car off and then back on again the speedometer will function normally everytime. The tachometer works just fine for me though. I took the car to the dealer and there were no error codes to read and they couldnt reproduce the symptom. So next time I take it to them theyre going to have to keep it over night when it gets cold enough because that is the only time I've seen this behavior. Didnt see this problem all summer and as soon as it got cold out again it came back...

yeah thats exactly what im experiencing. the car stays out in the cold overnight and the dials wont work. then when i restart the car in warmer weather its back to normal. you should leave the car in the cold and drive it to the dealer without turning off the engine..then you can reproduce the behavior

That's a really strange issue. I'll keep an eye on mine.

Our cars were engineered to be garaged in the winter. The sensor senses winter time so it tries to hibernate. :)

Like said, the worst possibility time-wise is waiting for the part. It's not "your problem", though. They should arrange something for transportation. Make sure you go to a good dealership, though. Was just reading on the 'vette forum that several 'vettes got wrecked today/yesterday at dealerships/detail shops by over-zealous application of the throttle by people with no reason to do so.
