Central dash squeak
have 400 miles on my car now. I noticed that there is a squeak(sounds like rubbing styrofoam) coming from the central dash when I drive on bumpy roads(which means all highways in LA). On the way to work today I tried to locate the source of the noise, and I found that the squeak goes away if I use my finger to press on the top left part of the plastic piece surrounding the audio head unit.
Anyone has the same problem? Should I bring it back to Nissan and have them replace that piece of plastic? I am tempted to pop open the piece and lube the clips, but I'd like to ask for some feedbacks first... thanks in advance! |

lube the clips?? never heard of such thing.
check the audiosection how to remove your bezel. one of the tapping screws might be loose. drive it around while your bits are unassembled and see if that helps. if not you might need to add some felt to quiet it down. |

Yeah it does happen to my Z too. I usually drive with music on so I didn't hear it for the whole year. Then last week I didn't have the music on and I hear the squeak. At first, I thought the noise was from some fallen leaf getting stuck on the windshield wipers but then I checked and didn't see any debris.
Now the squeak is constant. I couldn't tell exactly where it came from. I dont want to bring the car to Nissan and have them open the whole damn dashboard up just to fix the squeak. It does more harm than good. I just have to live with it until i know how to fix it. |

I fully agree with you. Perhaps bear with the noise for a while to break-in the parts.
However, having upgraded my stereo, the dealer or you taking the audio parts is very easy, safe, and not very intrusive. I would do it myself or take it to the dealer if I were you. Quote:

I have a squeak in my dash as well. It migrates from side to side & worsens any time I drive up an incline, especially at an angle. So I hear it every time I pull into my driveway or parking garage at work. The squeak is immediately followed by the clunk clunk of my top cover ad is slides around...letting me know its still back there. That's another story. In short, I've stripped the dash down as far as possible without rendering the car non-driveable & still was unable to isolate the noise. It's deep. Has to be some contact point near the unibody frame work and underpinnings of the dash assembly. A lost cause in other words. I refer to it as my 45 thousand dollar invisible canary.

I have only had my Z for about 4 months, but it has had the same little squeak since day 1. If I push the bezel just above the radio, right where it meets the pocket where the nav screen would go (if I had the option), it temporarily is fixed. One day I will get around to pulling it apart and fixing it myself, probably when I decide to upgrade from the base stereo.

I've had a new Saab and a new Acura when, after a month or so, noises like that just went away, as things broke in. I'd give it some time before having your dash torn apart and creating new squeaks and other problems.
