It's only about a 1/2 sec faster from 0-60, can you really feel that difference on the street?

I think with some of these cars the sensation of speed is different, the Z is so low to the ground and handles so well that sometimes you don't realize how fast you are going.

THe 5-60 is what is usually experienced the most, considering most people are not pro-drivers and don't do tire and clutch-smoking launches nearly as often as they pull away hard from a light/slow roll/non-revved up launch.

The Z takes nearly 6 seconds to do 5-60 (5.8), while the GT500 takes 4.5. It is a very considerable difference.

A lot of reviews came up with a time much closer to 5 secs for the z

I agree with this statement 100%. The Z does not feel fast, but it is fast. Just on the way into the office this morning I was doing 60 and stepped on the gas just a bit. I could feel the car pull a little, but was very surprised when I looked at the spedo and saw I was now doing 85 (and that was only at 5500 RPM); I had to back off quickly as it was too fast for that stretch of road.

Even in 1st gear when it feels like you are not going fast, I find I am typically moving much quicker than I thought.

The Z has low torque for its hp. You don't really feel it pull. On my first Z test drive, I floored it, looked down, "holy crap I'm doing 85".

You have to pay attn to the speedo in this car. It is deceptively fast. Very easy to trick the butt dyno.

The Mazdaspeed3, on the other hand, actually has more torque than the Z. It's not quite as fast, but you feel a tug in your lumbar region with every shift.

This is true. The Z doesn't make much power at all below 4,000 RPM but from 4,000 to redline it's got nice power and the delivery is very linear, so you don't really feel the "thrust" that you would with a car that's got more torque.

in some ways i like that. i think the fact that its pretty tame (some might say weak or boring) below 4000 is what allows it to be a very easy casual driving car, but when you want it to move, the power is there, its just up high. When people say the car is slow, i feel like they are referring to the low end, because all i know is that when i'm above 4k at WOT, this thing hauls ***, and i don't think its slow.

That being said, i wouldn't mind if there was some more pull at 2500-4000

For the most part, I agree with this. Just carting around town in moderate traffic, I don't need the thing to pull like a tractor. Just want smooth cruising. When I want to play, or when I feel the need to get from 55 to 85 in a blink, I downshift and gas it, and the engine sings me a song, my heart races, and I find my happy place (the only happy place I have that doesn't involve some sort of sticky sex act or dolphins -- don't ask).

Yeah, the car is fast, you just have to rev it up to get to the power. It doesn't have the "power on tap" like a TTV6 or V8, but it's still got juice when you want it. Probably one of the reasons you can easily average 20mpg or better with city driving if you stay out of the power.

the pull on her car is incredible. it literally made my car feel horribly slow and i am very depressed driving it now. fortunately there aren't that many of the shelby's on the road to embarass Z's

Haha, one day no one from my Z crew showed up to our Saturday meet, so I decided to go to a Ford dealer and drive a 5.0 with the track package and 3.55 gear.

Look what happened?
