I have no desire to turn off VDC (SRM is fun for me, and wife would hate me if I disabled it :) ). Changing the clutch spring has restored a bit of feel in what was a very non-linear over boosted clutch prior. Its subtle, but so far I have been able to more easily modulate the catch point on shifts, and the 1/2 is far less clunky.

I play with both, search for threads on the matter and have decided that, srm on, vdc off= smooth ride. If you can't drive this car with the vdc off then you can't drive...point blank. If you can't control your throttle response or your traction control YOURSELF in a mild spin, then you should walk!

Not to hate, but really. This is my 7th Z (which includes a G35) and yes the 1-2 shift feels like a donkey punch, and is unlike all other MTs I've ever had. But in the end, all the electors in the world will not make up for driving knowledge. Next thing you will complain about stopping at red lights on a hill with a MT and that is the reason for getting an AT!!

If you can't drive, you can't drive. If you can't figure it out, get an old ford contour and write Z all over it.

trick.. just place foot on throttle gently when engaging higher gear. no jerky.

:iagree:

lighter clutch spring helps with the 1-2 shift.

Sorry to revive an old thread.

When people talk about "smooth shift", do they mean the car doesn't jerk or the shift lever just glides into gear smoothly?

I am asking because sometimes I find it hard to shift into 2nd, it even makes noise.

Thanks.

Man, lots of replies after I revived the thread. But nobody even bother to give me some help. Where is the spirit? :ugh2:

I always keep mine on though! Until I want to heel/toe myself and completely mess up, that's when I turn it back on..

I haven't found the srm to affect upshifting whether on or off. Hmm, I must be good at upshifting even for an old guy.:tiphat:

When people talk about "smooth shift", generally this mean the car doesn't jerk into the following gear smoothly when clutch is engaged.

if you're saying your gates are stiff, you need to get your car looked at. oil might be low, might be time to change the oil, might mean bad syncro's.

I love it on so I can hear my AAM Short Tails on downshifts. It sounds so awesome!!

kenchan 06-07-2012 01:21 PM

you'd get the same effect with a washer mod... so i heard.

SRM - Off
VDC - Off
Clutch Spring - No. (will be buying one though!)

370Z Purist 06-07-2012 03:29 PM

I have disabled SRM as I find it rather bores the hell out of me. Might be useful at a track since I'm not good enough of a driver yet to perform rapid downshifts or upshifts during cornering. Might actually improve pro drivers times, since SRM always knows perfect shifts, where as a human, close enough to perfect as they might be, will never actually be perfect all of the time, everytime.

I have removed my clutch spring altogether and found that performing the 1-2 shift is much easier and much smoother.

Thank you!

Could the clutch be a problem as well? My tranny was replaced not too long ago.

nnnn, does it grind often? if not, probably not the clutch. new gearboxes are stubborn sometimes. i know both my Z and G's gearboxes had a stubborn 5th and 6th when brand new. once about 3k miles it was smoother. now the Z is near 10K miles, no issue.
