I think it is unfair to compare the Z32 to a Z34. Yes they are both Z's, but they are two generations apart. Also, while the Z32 is a great car, in my opinion it is not a true Z. It's a solid sports car, just with a Z badge on it. I don't think it carries the heritage that all of the other Z's have. Again though, they both have pros and cons. I'm sure everyone knows what they are getting into if they buy a 20 year old car. If I were in this position though, I would keep my 370. If I were to buy a different Z, I would definitely choose a 240. The 240 is the best looking Z. I understand that they did not come with power from the factory, but dropping in an RB26dett or a small block v8 would fix that.

i unfortunately have never driven or been in a 300 ZX TT BUT my Cousin Mike (Rowe) did own one when he was in college, when he was up for a family visit to us (7-14-2012) he told me that he had a 300ZX twin turbo when he was in School and this one time he was on a trip that normally takes a person 2.5 hours..... he said " took me 45 minutes"......... " foot to the floor?" " haha i had the pedal to the floor"
so although i did not have the grace period of a 300zx my 2nd cousin did haha admiration. i could only wish

I think I'm also a false Z owner. I think the 370Z is an absolutely gorgeous car. For me the the Z32 comes in close second. If I thought the Z32 looked better I would have bought that :P

If you look at the Z32 from the side it does have a hint of 240Z (look at the A pillar and roof), but I agree it does not look like it at all. To say it is not a true Z car is wrong. I think it is the best Z car to date. That is just me.

It seems like people don't like the 350Z for some reason. I feel that there are far too many on the road (and driven by d-bags in my area for some reason). My favorites are 240Z and 300ZX(TT) tied..........and 370Z after. I didn't really care for the 260Z/280Z much because of the gimmicks or poor implimentation of EFI (in the 280Z's case). To touch on the inline-6 making a real Z.........I am a big fan of inline-4 and inline-6 engines, but they would be difficult to smog unless you have an inside connect and require builds to make power over the magic number (without catastrophic failure being almost a definite). For the CA18DET and SR20DET, that number was somewhere between 300-350HP depending on production model. Not sure what it was for the inline-6.
I love my 09 NISMO. Now that it has a bit more guts, I like it even more. If you put the same effort into giving the 300ZX and 370Z similar sized turbos and equal engine management (tuning, chip PowerFC, or whatever), I think it would be a pretty good match. The real question should be what would the cost difference. Take into account the costs when the 300ZX was 4 years old and the cost of parts at that time. Then make the compairison.

The Z32 does have great styling and performance for its age. My own humble, personal opinion goes something like: 240z > 370z > 300zx. I even considered selling the 370z in order to fund a BPU 300zx project that would become a daily driver. When I sat down and thought it all out, it just didn't make much sense to go back 20 years. When you say it out loud, it's hard to realize that the 300zx is over 20 years old now. Just food for thought.

While I do like the 240Z, it is just too small IMHO. And maybe I feel this way because I am 6'4". I actually liked the 350Z a lot before I got my 370Z.

I was being facetious with the inline-6 comment, a z-car is a z-car - unless we're talking about 2+2s, I prefer to think they don't exist.

Working here at Z1 I get to work with and drive both sides of this arguement. My wife and I own 2 Z32's and love them. I will never sell them because they have so much sentimental value to me.
However, we BOTH want a 370Z. In terms of handling right out of the box....370Z wins hands down in my opinion. As far as tuning goes, the 300zx TT will yield a much better ROI in terms of horsepower per dollar spent. The catch to this statement is that the 300zx is getting so old, you will have a few grand tied up right out of the gate in basic maintanence. This does not event consider repairs, paint/body work and the headache following the realization that most parts for the Z32 are already being discontinued. Each Z model has their own appeal. I would like to get my hands on a 240Z, as well as a Shiro Z31 someday...and I would not mind having a NISMO 350Z. |

It's odd reading that the 300zx is now an "old car". Just remember that several of these forum members are heavily biased towards the 370Z as they were crapping in diapers when the Z32 was released and in its prime. Perhaps there is a dedicated 300ZX forum that you can get guidance from. It's refreshing to see an older sports car looking sharp and well maintained.
If you have the time and money to restore/maintain the Z32, then go for it. I regularly fly in airplanes that were made in the 50s/60s, and keeping a Z32 sharp & healthy is a lot cheaper. |

370z is still the fat girl of the Z cars!
The early 300Z was a confusing car... VQ motor while ugly to look at makes the new Z cars to me! When the next Z hits you guys are on a be singing a different song...lol
