Gas gauge lights and something new

Hopefully this is not old news but it looks like the LED lights are inaccurate by 2-3 lights. Twice already I would park thinking that I have over a quarter of gas tank but as soon as I restart, I get the warning and the LEDs are different. I find the "range" reading to be accurate so I now rely on it.

Oh, I did not know that our cars have a rev-limit when in neutral. Duh on my part. :)

Yes there is one or two other threads about faulty gas guage.

I found the the one where the rightmost light wouldn't light up.

So, what's the verdict? are ALL gauges inherently inaccurate or is my gauge defective and needS replacing?

I am still searching for the other gauge-related threads.

Could you please post a link if you are successful. I can't seem to search for beans. Thanks.

Sounds defective or sensor dirty. All my LED's light up on my car after fillup.

Just found out if you leave your tank in half most of the time, then you fill up to full, usually the last light will not light up.

Gas gauge it's got a mind of its on sometime.

But here's a question for anyone. when does miles to empty come on?
if i remember mine is between 40 and 45 miles does that sound about right.

i once got stuck in between stations and must have driven at least 15 miles
with gauge blank. no dots = how many miles left.

I had a similar experience. At 2 dots I got a dash warning light and the left side computer read 45 miles, which quickly became 42 and a minute later 33 mile range. At about 12 mile range it went ---- and when I did find a station another 5 miles later, no dots, I only needed 17.4 gallons.

:stirthepot: If you want to set the little lady off, mention our drive in the country and I didn't have enough gas. It is good fun, especially if she is being quiet around my friends.

Did take my Z to low fuel warning light to see what happens....around 40 miles est...but depending on driving quickly can go to the 20's quick....by then I didn't want to chance it....so just filled up...all light lit up...no light issue here...

I agree with what other members said. I believe the inconsistency is because of the "V" shaped gas tank? (I could be wrong). This is why I ALWAYS fill up at 3 dots. However, I did drive up to 40 miles with "---" once. That was scary :ugh:

cab83_750 10-24-2010 08:26 PM

I always fill up at 1/4 being earthquake-ready. :)

So, I guess my issue is global. I'll go ahead and adjust/ignore accordingly.

Thx

I usually don't fill up till I get the "---" miles left.
Haven't noticed if the last full light is on or off. I'll have to check.
But yes, I agree. When the gas gauge goes from 3 lights to 2, it says something like "37 miles left", quickly drops to 23 miles left, and then quickly goes to ---.
When I get the first number (37?) I note the mileage and make a mental calculation from there.
Haven't run out of gas yet ;)

If our fuel pumps are inside the gas tank, as I believe they are, the gas is cooling the pump. How far down on gas, until the pump is exposed?

Not sure if the pump is inside the tank. Note that by practice, it has been highly recommended that you should never attempt to use all gas in the tank. In other words, try not to run out of gas. In a few years, you will have gunk in the tank and this gunk will interfere with your pump and filter. This is the reason that, in addition to be earthquake-ready, I alwas fill up once I get 1/4.

Had the same issue once - let it go a little below a quarter and when I started the next morning it said low fuel!

Try not to let it go that low now and judge by the range to empty.
