If it is superior to even the best conventional synthetic oils, I don't see why it is a bad thing unless the price goes through the roof.

Yes just a new spec. Several oils already meet the spec, others haven't finished testing yet (it takes quite some time for the whole testing approval process).
The new API spec is SN, vs the old SM. Speaking of oil, what do folks think of running the engine on refined beef fat? Green Earth Technologies
