Thinking of trading 09 stg 2 STI for 370...
Hellou,
this is my first post here. Currently I own 2009 Subaru STI, it's Stg 2. When i got it, it was stock, so i did step by step mods to it (tinted rear lights, windows, lip spoler, Navi, SPT CB, DP, Cobb AP, CAI etc)... but the car keep giving me problems! i don't want to get into details, i'm just not happy... all problems are solvable, and probably won't occur again, it's just that i won't feel the same for the car... Anyway... My buddy has 350Z, and when my car wasn't running, we went out taking his car. i really liked the 2 seater feel, and although it's slower, it still feels fast. Did anyone make a switch from Sti/evo to 370Z? what are the downs with Z's? Someone told me that with just CAI and CB they make 300whp (????!!!), is this correct? I am currently in Jersey, so STI is fun in snow, but you can have fun with rwd as well, so no issues there... At first I was scared getting 2 seater (declined getting 08 C6), but now I know that i don't have the need for 4. Oh, also, would it be quicker around the track? (not 1/4 mile, that i know... mine runs mid 12's) p.s. i'm prob one of the most hated guy's in Z public... i have that vid on youtube mazdaspeed 3 vs 350z nismo lol |

I did.If i were to compare both cars in my own personal experience the evo has a lot of power to gain with some minor tweaks here and there, throttle response is quick compared to the Z in my opinion.In terms of speed I guess both cars are the same but if you drag the two the evo will get ahead first. Although mine wasn't stock at all.I have done a lot to the evo just like what you did to your STi which only gave me problems.The car was fun & fast but it is not reliable anymore to my daily driving.The Z is more of a lifestyle car you can bring it anywhere and people will give stares .You can get more power if you will slap on some turbo and it will out perform a stock evo on drag or track.If I only had the money I'd still keep the evo although I didn't so I trade it just my two cents

I went from an '08 STi to the Z. I liked the STi, but the engine's hesitations and flat spots always bothered me. Mine was stock, but many with tunes still had the problem (though less so).
The Z is a totally different car. The Subaru was decent quality in terms of fit-and-finish/solid feel, but the 370 is definitely a step up. The interior is a sharper design and its materials are noticeably better, and the chassis is near billet solid...no creaks or rattles. The Z's motor, while not offering the STi's (marginal) turbo rush, is a decent unit. At least it pulls cleanly, unlike the STi's motor. It's got decent torque and a somewhat lively top end, though it does have some vibration over 5K. Plus, it doesn't exactly sing like an exotic...at least inside the car, that is. It sounds pretty good outside. Both cars handle well, but I prefer the Z's handling. It grips like mad and feels very sure-footed. It rides well, too. It also understeers less than the STi. The shifter is good, though a tad light for my taste. The clutch is a bit of a sore spot...it has little feel, an abrupt engagement and the pedal it too light, and it chatters when pulling away. Smooth shifts are not impossible, but they're more of a challenge than they should be. Stock Zs run low-to-mid 13s in the quarter and trap about 105 mph. Can they be made quicker? Sure, but it's not as easy as a factory turbo car. I'm sure a tune and bolt-ons will improve its times, but if you really want a noticeable seat-of-the-pants improvement you'll need forced induction, and that's a decent amount of coin. I've heard so many problems from sti and evo owners. Although they have a fast car, the have to deal with so many issues with the car. Like I've said to many people, sti and evo's are good to admire but not to own. Too many problems to deal with. You hear about these evo's and sti's making huge power, but you don't hear about the owners pulling their hair out dealing with the issues and maintenance.

I've driven the pre-facelift STi, and own an '04 WRX which is my daily driver, and so although I can't make a direct comparison between your '08 STi and the 370z (I have an '09 with the sport package and 6 speed manual transmission), there are obvious differences between the Subie and the Z. Biggest thing that I notice is the improved low end torque on the Z and the lack of turbo lag, as well as the fact that the brakes on the Z on just head and shoulders above those on the WRX. Given your mods and the fact that you're comparing the STi these are probably not going to be as noticeable. The Z does drive like a smaller car though, and I'm sure that will be your assessment as well. I've made some upgrades to the WRX, but going to 17 inch rims with Bridgestone RE070 tires has done wonders to improve grip, steering feel and cut down on understeer vs the all seasons the car came with. Gotta say though, I enjoy both cars, and the WRX has been very reliable.

Nah, you can totally DD the car in winter, especially in Jersey.
OP -- I live in South Jersey and drove all through the terrible winter we had and never had any problems -- and I never even bought winter tires, although I will this year depending on how it looks. As far as the cars go I looked at both the Evo X and STi before buying my Z. They were both serious considerations but the Z was just better for me at the time. Without serious investment you will never make the same amount of power out of this car for obvious reasons, but if you can be happy with light mods then the car will treat you well. There are no major widespread issues with the car either.

If you like the modability of the STi, trade it in to get a Z then buy an Evo VIII-IX for a winter "beater" car.
All I know is the latest generation STi is butt ugly and I'd do anything to replace it with something else if I had to look at that atrocity every day (no offense).

hard to find one that hasnt been ran to shit though, one of my soldiers awhile back bought one from a lemon lot and had boost leak issues, evac codes, misfires, he eventually took it back and bought an SRT-4, what a fuckin idiot.

Have you driven a 370z yet? If not I would suggest doing so. It's going to feel rather slow compared to your STI, but if thats something that doesn't bother you then everything else will be a step up from the STI. The interior, brakes, handling, etc will all be better than the STI. Thats not to say the STI isn't a great car. I used to have a 06 WRX stage 1 with CBE, never gave me a single problem. Was going to get a STI but when they went with the hatch I started looking elsewhere. Having been a die hard Z fan for 10 years and I decided to get the 370z instead. I've driven plenty of STI's and I can tell you that with yours being a Stage 2 the Z will feel rather slow.
Also I'm surprised to hear your problems with your car. I've known may people that went stage 2 with WRX's and STI's and never had a single problem. Perhaps there are other mods that you didn't mention that may have caused the issue. But a simple turbo back exhaust and cobb tune should be no problem. Last food for thought, there is a guy here who has pretty much every non-turbo mod available right now and his fastest time is 12.8. Just something to consider if you are going to be looking at mods later on down the line considering your current car is a mid 12 car. |

I'll put it this way. I have a modified Evo X which I quite like the driving dynamics and "feel" of, but I like the feel of the 370Z better. I like how it rotates, I like how it is more nimble; it's just a better driver's car.
It's pretty much common opinion out there that the Evo X handles and feels superior to the 08+ STi, so think of my feedback what you will. I suggest picking up the Z. IMO it's two steps above the STi.

although my STI is 09, I think i have ringland issue. pisses me off, cause i got to take it to the dealer, and to do that, i have to take everything off (this would be the 3rd time i have to do that). First, when i putted CAI (cobb has a new map for it), the car started driving like **** after 300miles... took all off, took it to the dealer, he told me that cause of CAI i have oil in the system now (it pulled oil from crank)... needed oil separator. I didn't put the intake back on, drove it for a bit, but it still drives like **** (barely hitting 15psi, vs 20psi that it should be hitting). Did a log, and was told it's ringlands. Then, I have a weird creak in the back... should be taken care of by the dealer... When i was getting my lights tinted (reputable place, 212 motoring in NY), they pointed out that both my rear lights had cracks thru them (kind of look like spider web, only noticed up close, and kind of neat), dealer refused changing them cause they were tinted. As far as stop light to stop light speed... yea, STI is much quicker off the line than most cars, but to do that you are abusing it. I have launch control now, but still, doing 5k launches without wheel spin, puts a lot of stress on the drivetrain. so I do it on very rare occasions (to teach some m or amg snubs). When I was stage 1, i hit 12.9 at 105, so looking at your guy's trap i'd say Z is pretty even on the roll with stg 1 sti. I did test drive the 370 when it first came out. I liked it... i like the 2 door coupe feel it has to it. Before i got STI my choices were 335, 135, 370, C6, Z4MC... really wanted Z4MC but couldn't find the color I wanted at the time. Almost bought ls3 C6. Left bmw's alone, cause i was reading about all the problems they have... turbo's giving out after 50k, and just **** service you get from dealers. |
