New Car Break In

Hey new 370z owners, do you have any info about the break in period? In the manual it says the first 1200 miles, no rpm over 4k. That's pretty slow and boring. I am so bored now and I only have 400 miles!!

Yes, it IS slow and boring, but I'm following it. It really shouldn't take too long to emass 1200 miles, but daaaaaaaamn, each one feels three times longer than normal.

My "03" 350Z automatic - I

1,153 miles between Fri. 1:38pm and Mon. 8am. I drove it on vary tight roads all weekend after my 50 miles+ tire break in and stayed under 4k on Fri. and at 750 'ish on Sun. 9am I brook the rears lose under power and never went over 4k. At 980 'ish I drove home from Auburn, Ca. on I-80, I-5, & I-580 at some pretty high speeds and never went over 4k. Mon. I went back to the dealer and got my oil changed.

It was not boring

I went over that with 7 miles on the car. The tires caught on fire and the roof flew off. It was awesome.

Seriously, lots of us believe in the harsh break in method. Do your research and decide what makes sense to you.

Well this is how i see it...

"most modern car engines are broken in at the factory, before assembly. Therefore the old tradition of breaking in a new car doesn't apply anymore. Just drive as you normally would drive and treat the car the way you would treat anything else of value."

I only have 400 or so myself but I already went over 4k a few times.. i doubt its gonna hurt my engine... c'mon!!! its a NISSAN;-)

Before this thread gets locked, deleted, and/or moved, know this.

Different people will have varying degrees of what they think is "right" for your car. The best thing you can do is read the different opinions, read your manual, and read what you can on the Internet and then make a decision that *YOU* can live with.

If you can live with driving it 1200 miles under 4k, good for you (and maybe good for your car!), which is what your manual says.

Personally, I drove the car during break-in like I do normally. I don't "redline" or drive like an animal, but certainly venture above 4k RPMs regularly. If my car is going to take 100k miles of me driving it that way, I figured it can take the first 1200 that way as well.

(To people who believe strongly in the delicate break in method)

If i am driving in a mountanous area and i am keeping it in a lower gear while going down a hill to maintain my speed, is that worse than being in a higher gear and using the brakes.

The manual says what it says. It is thee authority for break-in for your car. If you go outside of the parameters and something breaks and Nissan thinks you did indeed exceed the parameters for break-in, then guess what? Your warranty claim may and probably will be denied.

If you listen to the people in these forms or other forms, without knowing who they really are because we're in cyberspace, then by all means take their advice. Their advice, if followed, will probably exceed parameters for break-in. See above about warranty claims.

If engines are broke in at the factory and there is no break-in period for cars these days like some people believe, then ask yourself why the manual has a blurb on break-in.

Forum advice in general should be taken with a grain of salt without knowing the qualifications of those offering the advice. IMO, there are very few in this forum worthy of offering good advice but they are here which is a plus for us.
