370Z Blind Spots
 

Do you guys have trouble when your on the road with the blind spots on the car? Whenever I am trying to change lanes, I am finding it very difficult to see my blind spots due to the size of the mirrors and I cannot place the smaller circle mirror because the mirrors are small as it is lol.

Anybody figure out a way to see when a car is literally right next to you by your blind spot?

You need to adjust the mirrors so they are far enough out so you can't see your car.

turn the sideviews all the way out as far as they go and you will be able to see your blindspot. Its a little confusing in the beginning but i got used to it and now i dont have anymore blindspots.

I just lean forward and look over my shoulder

Whats wrong with turning your head?

I've never met anyone who complained about side mirror blind spots who actually had their mirrors adjusted properly.

to put it simply, you shouldn't be able to see the same part of an object in 2 mirrors at once. If so, you will have blind spots. IE, if an ambulance were in between your rear view, and right side view mirror, you should be able to read 'AMBU' on the center mirror and 'LANCE' on the right side view mirror. There shouldn't be any overlap or gap.

the best way is to adjust your side mirror to its nearest blind spot along with your regular side view. And Im hoping you turn your head while switching lanes? But I think the real challenge is backing out from a public parking lot.

car awareness. If I want to go into a lane, I eye it up for a good 30 seconds. Monitor movement. Then when I am ready, lean forward check the mirror for anyone and make my move.

What are you doing driving slow enough that other people are on your side?

thats not a bad idea for driving in general, but i mean if you need to change lanes suddenly to avoid an accident or something you can't rely on waiting a few seconds to make sure its clear. Your mirrors etc need to be set up so that you can know whether a car is in your way instantly.

I attached small rectangular concave mirrors (at any auto parts chain)at the bottom of each door mirror. I got the idea from a Ferrari at a local car show.

i just change lanes without regard and pray there's no car there..SO FAR SO GOOD!

kidding, just set them wide and take a turn of the head like everyone has stated.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I am coming from an 07 VW Rabbit to a new 10' Z. It'll take sometime to adjust, but I will def look over my shoulders before merging. I will also consider those lil mirrors that go on the bottom of the mirror. And yes the challenge of backing out in a parking lot will be interesting...but practice makes perfect. Thank you all for the help and advice.

yea a big challenge is backing out of a parking space when you've got a big *** SUV or Van to both sides. you kind of just have to back out real slow and .... hope.

Maybe its hard to see out when you're having to adjust your tampon...

The guys at Car Talk did a great bit on how to properly adjust your side mirrors. I have used their technique for years. In the beginning it is difficult to understand what you are seeing, but it is worth learning.

1. Adjust your left side mirror so that you have it at the right height, then move it OUTward until you can no longer see the side of your car.

2. Adjust your right side mirror by leaning over so that your head is in the center of the console, then adjust the right mirror so that the view from that position is the same as it was originally when you sat straight up in the driver's seat.

Now you have a good view of both blind spots (not perfect, but very good). You have a panoramic view of what's behind you if you use all three mirrors. The rearview mirror handles the center of the road, and each side mirror catches the side it is on.

Unlike the traditional setting, the images don't really overlap.

It's not difficult. Get on the freeway in moderate traffic and get in a lane where traffic can run in parallel lanes to you in the same direction of course. If you have your center rear view mirror adjusted properly, just wait until a car is coming up from the rear on one side or the other and gets in your center mirror blind spot. Then, adjust your left & right mirrors so that you can see the parallel cars in them when you can't see that same car in your center mirror.
What was difficult was doing that in the days before power assisted mirrors, but a willing passenger would solve that problem. Plus it's always a good idea to turn your head and check too, objects like motorcycles sneaking between cars in traffic jams are easy to miss.

what about those concave jdm part that you replace over your mirrors.do those things work better?

It does take some time getting use to but after you get the two side mirrors
adjusted it works pretty good. i find myself using the rear view mirror to watch the traffic flow on both sides before checking each side mirror before changing lanes.

but like one poster said backing out of parking lots and the such can get fun.

I put on baby blind spot mirrors. Work great.
