Auto downshifting. WTF?!

Guys, I'm very worried about this "auto-downshifting system" that 6 gears manual 370Z should mount. I'm not going to buy the 7 gears paddle shifting one, I want the 6 manual, I like to shift the old manner. But I absolutely don't want the car to downshift by itself!! I hope it will be possible to disengage this system! Have you heard something about?

Lock & Load 11-14-2008 02:25 AM

Good luck in trying to disengage the Auto rev matching system , i am not saying that it cannot be done however loss of warranty + $$$$$$$$$$$$ needed to do it as the engine and gearbox would have to be totally reprogrammed IMHO

I totally agree with your sentiments this so called manual gearbox is neither Arthur nor Martha :roflpuke2:

Cheers
Michael

****...
I thought that was an option...

Dav 11-14-2008 05:00 AM

I HOPE it's an option!

By auto down-shifting, do you mean the rev-matching system? If so, what would be the disadvantage besides losing this human control to computer control? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the G37 is the only car out right now that has that feature. Any feedback from that car? I would see this as an advantage since the reputation of a weak syncro and tranny from Nissan (hint hint....GT-R).

Dav 11-14-2008 08:45 AM

It's not exactly a disadvantage, 'cause it could even do a better work.
But I like to shift the gears by myself! Up and down! Have you ever had a manual transmission? Do you know how beautiful is to pull your foot on the brake and accelerator pedals together? It's a complete driving experience. I don't want such a system as I don't want an automatic 7 gears transmission.

jaesung83 11-14-2008 05:07 PM

how is that possiable? The car can't auto downshift for u on a manual trasmission car. What's the point getting a manual if the car gonna do all the fun work for u? But if this is true ur telling me in a manual trans (not touching the shifter) u will see the shifter automatically downshift for u? Haha I dunno this makes sense in an automatic not in a manual.

The G37 doesn't have that feature. You are confusing yourself with automatic Sport mode with up shift and down shift. I am going to sort this out right now.

G37

Automatic = You can use the sport mode and use + or - to upshift or down shift.
Manual: Traditional 6 speed.

Nissan GTR

It comes with it's one of a kind $20,000 price tag twin clutch transmission. 370Z is NOT getting this transmission.

Nissan 370Z

Automatic: 7 speed automatic just like G37. It comes with optional paddle shifters. You can upshift and down shift with thumb controlled + or - button.

Manual: World's First Rev Matching Downshifting tranny. The car WILL NOT down shift for you. All this tranny will do is rev match to perfect RPMs as you down shift. Lets say you're driving 6th gear but you want to go to 5th. All you have to do is clutch in > shift to 5th and clutch out. The car will rev match to the right RPMs as you let of your clutch. This should be very interesting. I'm not totally sure if the rev matching occurs right after down shifting to 5th or right after clutch disengage. You gotta wait 5 more days for that info.

This could be good...

This could end up being an okay compromise for people who like having a manual, but get "tech-envy" while looking at the features found on the automatics of cars such as the IS-F, C63, and Nissan's own GTR. Chevy's engineers dialled in launch control (REAL, warranty-backed launch control as far as I know), and no-lift upshifting into their Cobalt SS, and I'm sure those features are highlighted in every dealer's sales pitch. Then again... how cool would it have been that instead of dumping money into new manual shifting tech, Nissan included a 'performance driving academy' package with each new 370z purchase? Then we would still have the ability to rev-match downshift, but with a much cooler story to tell our friends!

Yes, but this do is the problem. The car does what an experienced driver likes to do, and I'm just talkin' about matching the revs for yourself! I don't know the correct english term, we italians call it "punta-tacco". When you learn to do it, you don't wanna lose it, especially me.. It's so long that I've been waiting for this car and have to hear this sh*t...

BlackBullet 11-15-2008 11:30 AM

What!!!!!

Ak370,
I think you are confused. You just restated what I was trying to say. I was asking if he was refering to the rev match system, because there is no such thing as a auto downshift system.

Dav,
You might get ur answer from what I just said above. BTW, there's a good chance that I started doing manual before you were driving at all.

Dav 11-15-2008 11:58 AM

I understood what you said, and I agree. It's nonsense that a manual does the automatic. But we all understand that this system matches revs. And I don't want such a system! I want to change gear up and down and even make mistakes in doing it!

Boba 11-15-2008 12:10 PM

So if it rev matches your downshifts, then how does the computer know what gear you are trying to get to? Example: You are in 6th gear, but you can downshift to so many gears as long as you are rev-matched - 5th or 4th gear most likely. I'm not quite sure how the computer can become so powerful that it reads the human mind, but we'll see soon enough after its reveal in a couple of days :)

CrownR426 11-15-2008 12:48 PM

Don't fret my dudes!
I'm sure it won't be so complicated once Nissan reveals it all!
lol... this topic is serious though!
Guess we gotta wait until then!

It probably doesn't have to "know" which gear you're into, it simply has to understand that you're downshifting. That means all the downshifts possible, from 6th to 2nd.

I really hope this is an option. My god. If it's stock and impossible to deactivate, I think it'll be better to buy the 7 gear with paddles. Or giving up and buying another car. Damn.
