Camaro board "Z only real competitor"
Since I was talking crap here yesterday about the camaro hurting its sales by taking too long to come out, I got curious and hit the maro board today to see what's up. Ran across a thread where the opinion of the poster what that the Z is the maro's only real competitor:
Only Real Competitor... - Camaro Forum - 2009 Camaro / 2010 Camaro / New Camaro SS Z28 Forums - Camaro5.com As you can imagine, there are differing opinions. |

i actually like the new camaro.
but it amazes me that people can compare horsepower as if that equals speed, and completely ignore that fact that their car will be tipping the scales just a hair under 2 tons... if it ever comes out. edit: and i guess i kinda cross-shopped them. only 2 cars i'm really considering. but the interior on the camaro is garbage imo. worse then the 350, probably more hard plastic. not to mention i felt like i was sitting on the floor, and couldn't see crap over the dash and the hood, and I'm 6 feet tall!!! plus those cars are waaaay too big. Overall a pretty civil discussion over there. Then again there are always a few who make statements that ruin it for the rest of them. I thought that mentality of working on Japanese cars being more expensive and difficult than domestics was over. I just finished working on a 3.9 Lincoln LS and let me tell you that I would take a Toyota, Nissan or Honda engine to work on any day, not to mention the ridiculous cost of for new domestic parts when you get about the 30K range.

SOME of the guys there are sensible. But, you can obviously tell the difference is the hard core fans. The hard core Camaro fans obviously are interested in straight line/stop light to stop light racing. They admit that the Z will probally best the Maro in the curves.
The only problem I see is that there will be more than a few Maro/muscle car owners street racing. That scares me as this could cause many accidents. I for one think the Maro is a VERY cool car; the Z28, if made will be outstanding!! But, I do not need four seats for my fun car, and I just like the Z's handling ability and true sport car'ness more than the muscle car. It is quite clear that while the Z is not a light car like the Audi TT RS, Cayman, any RX car, it is lighter than the muscle car competition. And, it has a nice torque band as the American cars do (just not as much torque; enough to keep you from spining the wheels and burning rubber). Lastly, it is not as expensive as the Audi, BMW, Porsche competion. The Z is, IMO, the perfect compromise and right up my alley. If I see Camaro owners or even new Stang/Challenger owners on the road... I will give them a thumbs up. If they are acting like imature street racers, I will ignore them. EVERY car has it's positives and drawbacks. We all will choose the postives we want, and the drawbacks we can live with. That said... Make mine a Z!! |
