HORRIBLE NOISE! Screeeeeching...
Hi,
Yesterday after work, (my car was parked all day) After I started driving, one of my wheels (passenger side) was making this horrible screeching noise. When I tapped the breaks, it would quiet down a little. I drove for 5 minutes and it stopped. I can't see anything wrong visually. Do you have any idea what it could have been? Should I take her in?

Remove the wheel and do an inspection of the area and the brake caliper, including checking the pads by removing and inspecting them too.

Look at your rotors to see whether there are any new prominent grooves on the rotor faces. If the sound is gone you might need to take it in.

I had a car do this intermittently due a bad wheel bearing. But I agree with the others - probably a brake issue. I like the rust and pebble theories. I've had both happen and cause noise.

After I wash my car and park it in the garage, the brakes make a decent amount of noise for a few seconds the next day when I pull it out.

I had this problem with my G35, I took it in several times to the dealership.
They said they due to our good habit of slowly coming to a stop the brake dust builds up inside and creates a layer that's why you hear this sound cause it's scratching against the roters. Try this. find an empty road and slam on your brakes from like 30 - 40 mphs. It should remove all the dust and the sound will go away. |

It's very unlikely that a "gravel or pebble" got between...where does one come up with these types of ideas?? ...the space between the rotor & brake pad is very small only brake dust exists & even that is eliminated by scouring of the pad against the rotor.

I dunno, he should check, because there could be a small turtle stuck in there. They have really hard shells!

So you say it stopped after driving it for five minutes and you still want to take it in? Unless it happens again, don't bother.
