Drive by wire (in general)
I have never had a car with it. Honestly, the only car I have driven with it has been my mother's 328i and I hate it. There have been several threads about the 370's DBW and it worried me a little. I then looked at other car forums, and most are complaining about the same thing. So I am just guessing that DBW is going to be less responsive across every manufacturer compared to a cables throttle correct? So if I buy a new car next year, I will hav to get used to it?

Some find SprintBooster helps.

The response to the throttle input is controlled by the computer. You can put your foot to the boards but the computer can say, nah your only getting 15% because you're being a nucklehead. Personally I haven't had a problem with the DBW system in this car or the G35, it seems plenty responsive to me both on the street and on track. People have different opinions of what the mapping should be (pedal position translating to throttle opening) but those are all just opinions and everyone has a different one.

The Z is not nearly as bad as the MINI DBW. Frankly, I notice no problem on my 2009 Z, but am still interested in the sprint booster for the performance claims. My understanding is that if you floor any DBW car you will get lag. But a smoother, progressive move to WOT will eliminate the lag.

Ah ok. This will be my first new car and still haven't been able to test drive one yet. (The delearship I went to only had one 6mt and it was a nismo which still had the spring spacers lol)

A lot of it depends on your driving style and what you are used to. The DBW in my dad's Civic SI drove me nuts when I first drove it, because I wasn't used to it. It's still a little laggy, but once you get used to it, there really isn't much of a difference.
I do wish more tuners would take advantage of the ability to adjust the throttle response, as that was supposed to be a main benefit of DBW. |

Well the main issue in the 328i is merging or changing lanes. If there is a gap and you put the foot to the floor, it takes a good 3 seconds and then something happens.

Basically, it's like turbo lag on a diesel car . If you're driving a small diesel car it's much worse as you don't even get much power after 3 seconds, so you're screwed when trying to change lanes or merge.
