Default Manual Transmission

Is it a bad idea to start the car from stop to 2nd gear and skipping 1st gear? I've been starting from 1st and there seems to be a slight slow rough transitioning from 1st to 2nd gear but by skipping 1st gear altogether i can get going through the gear much faster. Its as if there's a slow response time from getting 1st to 2nd.

What do you all think?

You can do it if you're on a downgrade. But on a flat surface I think you end up having to use too much clutch to get it going due to the lack of low end grunt.

yah, use 1st from a complete stop. you're going to prematurely wear out your clutch, or bog the engine.

You can do it, but you should really just learn to make that 1-2 shift smoothly.

Yup. The 1-2 shift on the 6MT can be a little finicky. You pick it up with a little practice.

A 1-2 shift takes timing to get smooth on any car. Just keep practicing and you'll get the feel.

How about an automatic non sports car.
If their is a problem take it to a dealership early. If not, learn to use first gear and save your clutch.

for the automatic, they say the only reason to start in 2nd gear instead of 1st is to avoid spin out on icy road. i tried it out on my mercedes and it felt slower so i never used it again.

I think you'll put more strain on the transmission but I'm no mechanic. I think if there's a 1st gear there's a good reason for it and skipping first gear doesn't make sense if not moving off a slippery surface such as snow or ice.

You were expecting it to be faster?
