heh I remember this scaring me before I realized what it was - I thought my car was in limp mode already or something! :P
Yep the clutch-in, first gear works - just remember that even when it's not connected to anything the engine is still generating torque - and enough torque can strain the mountings and twist the whole shebang up. Torque is better off sent to the wheels!
