Fuel Economy

Hey all I was just wondering what kind fuel economy you get out of Z.

When driving on the highway I noticed I get around 22-25.4 mpg on the meter driving on the highway. That is low in my opinion when the car is rated at 26mpg. Do you have any tips on how to improve fuel economy on city and highway driving??

I also notice that once i take the car past 80mph and keep applying the gas there is a very subtle kinda like a whistling sound (almost like the sound of a commercial plane revving up to fly but quieter) from the engine is that normal???

AK370Z 08-15-2010 06:19 PM

I am going to blame your location for the poor gas mileage.

Roger that. Hard to get a good air to fuel ratio when there is no air.

Ok, on serious note, are you complaining about 25.4 MPG? You think nissan (or EPA) cheated you out of .6 MPG? If you can shift at 2000 rpm (and don't rev above 4000 rpm) and drive at 65 MPH on highway , i'm sure you'll get that 26 MPG. I know members reported up to 29 MPG when they were driving on the highway. You mpg depends on your driving habit. I'm lucky if I get 16 MPG! :driving:

I have no clue what you mean by the whistling sound. Maybe it's air thats hitting your side mirrors at 80+ mph?

antennahead 08-15-2010 06:45 PM

He needs a custom tune

tdd1986 08-15-2010 06:51 PM

Hahahaha i gotta move back to earth damn this red rock!!

Do you hear any hissing noise at all in ur smurf mobile AK? sounds kinda like an electric motor in an electric car revving every time you apply gas past 80mph. you have to shut off the radio and close the windows to hear it lol

menzzer37 08-15-2010 06:53 PM

on my 7AT, cruising at 63/64, I can get 31mpg by the meter. This is of course in flat Indiana though.

There is only one smurf on this board, and it's not AK's :roflpuke2:

I have no idea what this whistling noise is though. But for the record, I get about 27 mpg with a mix of stop and go traffic / freeway.

28/highway 20/city 15/driving stupid

You just might be the only one doing 63/64 in Indiana. I do 74/75 and get passed regularly.

I have gotten 26.3mpg with an average speed of 72mph.

Mixed driving has been closer to 20. I'm sure once my Berk CBE gets installed it'll be closer to 16. :driving:

Tronchaser 08-15-2010 08:43 PM

While driving back from WV, I averaged just over 26 mpg (all highway miles), at about 67 mph.. That's right about where I expected it to fall.

OldGuy 08-15-2010 09:38 PM

Just drove from suburban PGH to suburban Washington DC and back---almost all gentle highway cruising. Air was on much of the trip, 2 passengers w light luggage load. With cruise control set to an almost constant 67 mph (except for road construction areas), my 7speed automatic (now nicely broken in at 3490 miles) got me 30.9 mpg, door to door. I'm very pleased.

x2

We get 32+ mpg cruising at an average 63 mph on a 2010 7AT. It helps being in manual mode, though, so it stays in 7th gear with full lock up 100% of the time.

Jeffblue 08-15-2010 10:24 PM

i use the gas cubby ap for iphone. you enter your mileage of your car every fill up, and how many gallons /cost per gallon and some other info. long story short it tells you your avg fuel eceonomy overall. i get 19.1 with 50/50 city/highway. i'm content with that. my altima i got 24 mpg overall. 5 mpg less for much better performance and all around car. the way i see it is. if i have a car that slurps 93 octane gas i shouldn't be overly concerned with mpg.

christian370z 08-15-2010 10:37 PM

I just averaged about 28mpg on my drive to San Diego going about 70mph with my 6mt 370z. I get close to 20mpg around town but it is really pretty difficult with all the traffic and lights so I get closer to 17mpg in town.

But I didn't buy this car to save gas!

Strangler 08-16-2010 06:32 AM

On my nav screen it was around 19 MPG when I first got it. Now at 1000ish miles it shows 20.6 MPG. Hopefully the number keeps going up.

Matt 08-16-2010 06:44 AM

I never saw above 16 mpg unless I was on the highway. Even then, I was lucky to see 21 mpg.

If you're getting 20+ mpg around in the city, you should have bought a Buick instead, because you're certainly not getting any use out of the Z. :stirthepot:

If you want to see real data, check out Fuelly:

Browse All Nissan 370Zs | Fuelly

Its a website where you can key in your fill ups and it runs the stats for you. The cool thing is though, you can browse all of the cars and motorcycles on the site.

Mine doesn't show up yet in the general list because I only have two fillups in the Z thus far:
http://www.fuelly.com/driver/lesspeoplemorerobots

tdd1986 08-16-2010 07:55 PM

cool site whiplash thx for that. I can never run 65-69 on the highway lol its gotta be at least 80 and above that probably explains the low gas mileage :P and a couple speeding tickets haha

I average around 24mpg highway driving from FL up to GA and thats not bad at all in retrospect and around 20.9 city with stop and go traffic

Zaggeron 08-16-2010 08:17 PM

I never let a minivan beat me to the next stoplight ;), but I don't floor it or anything. I get just a tick under 20 mpg in my mixed city/highway driving. I'm at about 2900 miles so far.

ProfessorDave 08-16-2010 08:55 PM

Gas mileage?! Am I supposed to care about that? I have a Mazda (sans Miata doors) for that.

WarmAndSCSI 09-05-2010 11:59 AM

Just going to throw some actual highway mileage data out there.

Mileage from San Francisco to Reno, NV (mostly uphill!) - 29.3 mpg @ 71 mph average
Mileage from Reno, NV to Wendover, NV/UT (lots of mountain passes, high altitude 6000-7000 ft) - 27.6 mpg @ 76 mph average.

Measured at the pump.

Not too shabby for a 332 bhp sports car! And well above the EPA estimated fuel econ.

^~80 mile drive from San Diego to Irvine.

I get 27mpg driving @72 mph. 17-18 @ 22-23 mph.

Red__Zed 09-06-2010 09:22 PM

I averaged 34 mpg on my drive back from York, PA on Sunday. My mind was blown.

I usually get around 20, depending on how/where I'm driving.

did you push the car from york? jk!

That's awesome...maybe I will drive to york and back for that type of numbers on the Z.

I can't go into 7th in manual mode. 6th is as high as it lets me shift.

Something is wrong then. I can get into 7th at 47 mph or so.

I haven't really checked to compare. But does the gauge mpg differ from the nav avg? On my nav it has always shown 20.9, maybe gone up or down a few points. But not by much.

370Z JT 09-08-2010 02:10 PM

before exhaust 19 MPG. after exhaust 15 MPG.

Sorry, I don't have navigation. From my experience the gauge mpg is pretty accurate.

i believe dat i get 30.4 mpg when cruising at 72mph i think being on 7th gear and cruise control helps alot

Cell 09-26-2010 10:07 AM

According to my gauge, I get 260 miles to the tank even driving like a grandma... That comes out to about 13-14 mpg... Something is wrong there?

here is my Fuel Economy information. i do a 15 mile commute via local/highway to work 5 days a week. on average i'd say i do 50/50 local/highway. I do a bit of spirited driving 1-2 times a day. (flooring the car to 70-80 when merging, driving real fast on wind roads near my house) so i tink i am a pretty average Z driver. I dont baby the car and use it like a corolla, but i dont track it.

pics are via gas cubby. its an iphone ap that tracks your fuel/maintenance costs.

Mt Tam I am 09-26-2010 11:46 AM

I always fill up and reset trip odometer. Under break-in I got up to 17.4 MPG with little to no freeway. Since then its 13-15. Slightly better than expected.
