Does turning off VDC disable ABS?
I had some A-hole turn left in front of me yesterday causing me to have to slam on my brakes and swerve hard to the right, luckily into a driveway, otherwise I would have chose to slam into the guy. So I avoided the collision, but while doing so it definitely sounded like my tires were locking up and skidding. I didn't notice the brake pedal pulsating like I have in other cars when the ABS kicked in. Now I'm wondering if my ABS was functioning or not.
I did have the VDC turned off, does doing so also disable the ABS? |

VDC OFF won't turn off ABS. You never would have swerved into a driveway if your ABS wasn't working. Instead, you would have skidded right into the back of the guy despite having your wheel turned full lock.

How fast were you going? I think below a certain speed, the ABS doesn't kick in.
Also, even when it does activate, it doesn't mean the brakes can't possibly lock up -- all it does is pulse the brakes for you making it less likely to lock.

ETA: Funny thing I noticed after I'd come to a skidding stop was all the crap that was thrown up in the air by my front wheels that got in my eyes. Last edited by ARFCOM; 08-13-2010 at 01:44 PM. |

I wasn't behind the guy, we were going in opposite directions and he started to make a left turn across my lane in front of me, he saw me and then slammed on his brakes, stopping in my lane. I would have impacted his front right fender/wheel if I hadn't swerved. (I just don't want anyone thinking that I was behind the guy and almost rear ended him)

VDC only assist the driver in certain situations.
Old school Zs and other RWD cars didn't had VDC and people that knew how to drive RWD car did fine. So if you don't know or never have driven a RWD car before keep the VDC on.

I'm in my 40's, so I'm more than old enough to have years of experience driving rear wheel drive cars with out any kind of traction control systems.
It's no big deal to me to power slide through a turn on dry, wet or snowy pavement, I grew up doing it. It's kind of funny to think that some of the younger drivers on this site may not have that experience due to so many new cars having traction control systems on them now a days. |

No, the ABS didn't turn off when VDC was disabled...Perhaps - due to the radical manuever, your car was sliding sideways more than rolling forward and the computer didn't sense the need to pulse... Funny thing about VDC it doesn't due a thing for a car that is out of control because of the law of physics... Anymore than 4 wheel drive does for helping a car stop on an icy road... VDC assists when the engine is revving, but that there is a difference in the rate of spin between the two rear tires.. VDC Logic slow the motor down till the rate between the two tires are within parameters. VDC and ABS is totally unrelated.. One is "Go logic" the other is stop logic... However, There is a relay that monitors wheel spin when tranny is engaged, high RPM is present, but the brake is fully engaged... Meaning you cannot Brake Torque a Z... If you pull the relay - the tail lights don't work and the ABS is disengaged - defeating all Brake Logic.
Hmmm Sounds like Nissan tied everything together for safety. Who'd of thunk it?
