Why so many zs?
I have been planning on getting a 370z since they first came out. It wasnt untill recent that I got serious with my searching and I finally test drove one a couple days ago and it was awesome. I was ready to buy one when I decided I would look at some used ones and see what they are going for. For being a one year old car they really dont hold their resale well and also there are a ton of them for sale. Why isnt anyone holding onto their zs and why is the resale so bad? Is there something I am missing?

In my opinion, Nissan will always carry the Scarlet letter of "made with Japanese beer cans.". No matter what will do, it will always be there. Same thing with the Toyota Supr or any other non-German/Italian sports car.
If you would look closer, that is one (if not the main reason) why nissan and Toyota created Lexus and Infinity --- it is all about branding. Oh, don't forget that Honda has Acura! Mind yah, my Z is a keeper....unless someone wants to trade his Cayenne for mine. :) |

Are you seeing used ones for sale or left over 2009's? People are broke -- not a lot of people can swing a 30K+ car right now, and even those who can, just barely can... If used, I bet they were leases (or repo'd...). I've seen like maybe one other 370 here in Tampa. |
Sports cars like this don't hold value

I don't see to many for sale here in Jersey. And I think alot of the used ones you are seeing were bought and then the person had to sell it because they couldn't swing the payments or got it repo'd |
I've looked online and yes, I do see a lot of them for sale but keep two things in mind.
1) people are not paying anywhere near sticker price. So for a (and I'm just throwing out numbers here) $40K car, that might go for $34K from the dealer new, it's probably only going to go for $30Kish used a year old. If that. Would you buy a used car for $30K if you could get one brand new that you know wasn't beat on yet for $34K? AND you would most likely be able to get a much better interest rate on the new one if you finance so payment wise you'd probably be about the same... 2) A lot of sports cars are purchased by kids and adults, only to find out that they can't afford it. And with things today, a lot of them could have been purchased only to have the owner lose their job so that is another possibility. I was just reading another thread about the expected life of the stock tires. not good, and for probably 80% of the people buying the car that was never a thought. then a year and 12K miles later they are finding that they need to spend $1500 (?) on new tires every year. Just saying, I wouldn't over think the fact that there are so many Z's out there for sale and automatically think that it's because something is wrong with the car itself. |
Around here a few 370Z, more 350Zs, Camaros, Challengers and Mustangs that anything else.
|
i've also seen countless threads of 'my Z for sale' with pretty strange reasons like
1. me and my girlfriend broke up, but we bought the car together, and had it titled in her name, but i paid for the whole thing 2. i decided i want a corvette 2 weeks later 3. i realized i can't afford the car 2 weeks later 4. i don't like the color anymore 5. i want the sports package, but for some reason, didn't even think about it when i was actually buying the car 6. wife making me sell the car that i didn't really win in the sweepstakes because she wears the pants in our relationship. to the more reasonable: 1. growing family 2. divorce 3. moving 4. loss of job and so on. |

I would put most of the blame on Nissan for the deminished values. When they offer incentives and rebates to sell new stock like they have, it kills the used market. I bought my $40,365 Z for $32,000. When someone comes to this site and tries to sell their Loaded Z that they actually paid 38K or so for 35K, people laugh at them and tell them they are asking way too much. Just the nature of the market.

According to the 370 wiki, the car has won this award:
Kelley Blue Book's Best Resale Value Award (2010) I thought resale value was a strongpoint of the Z, but I guess it is only when comparing to other sportscars. |

I remember back in the early '00s when Mitsubishi was having that 0/0/0 thing going on people were buying the Eclipse like they were free. Because there were so many deals on brand new cars from the dealer the used market suffered. If you didn't beat them down when you first bought the car and just said "I'll take it" at the first price the dealer gave, YOUR resale on the car is going to be poop. But if you got them down to a good price like Bullet said then your resale is probably going to be pretty decent. |

Resale on these things isnt actually cheap, I still see 09' Base's selling for 25K+ thats not exactly cheap.

Don't know but I don't see hardly any 370Z's around here. There might be a few used ones for sale but I never see any on the road or on any car lots. Not like the 350Z that is for sure, and even thats kinda rare. You're making it sound like the 370Z is like the new Camaro. lol

i see 5 camaros and mustangs of any year for any 1 z of any year

Since when do new cars hold their resale value in the first year? There's that old saying about "drive it off the lot and you just lost a bunch of $", 'ya know...
And who says everyone's unloading their new Z's - that's clearly not true. |

When I was looking for a used Z last month I found only about a dozen within a 120 mile radius (a wide net that includes Philly and northern NJ), and most at ridiculous (high) prices. Those priced well had been on dealer lots for 60 or more days, taken as trades. Seems like that would affect resale, at least regionally.

You are only the 2nd (or 3rd) Z34 I've seen around here and the surrounding area :tiphat: |

old gt 500's also cost a ton now

old corvettes...
|
I see quite a few of them roaming around in the DFW area now a days.
|
The resale value will differ with location and options. Just because there are a ton of Z's in one area, does not mean it will be as cheap in another with less stock. Simple case of supply and demand.
|
to me resell of a used z or even trade in value can depend on a few things.
how was the car treated by the last owner was it rolled hard and put up wet. is there a bunch of after market parts added to the car which will not add value to the car at trade or resell. around here most owners of camaros and mustangs keep em stock. where as z owners will add mods to there cars. with sports car you got to be careful either they have had tender loving care or had the -hit kicked out of them. |
I don't see many 370's on the road in my area. I think many people were impulsive, had to have it and then realized it was not a "practical" car for the $$. I noticed on here many people trading for something cheaper and/or bigger.
Baring a serious accident mine ain't going no where! |
If you want the car and like it why not just buy it? if you don't take a crap deal and find the deal you want you will be fine
