New Driver and Shifting Question
I was just wondering about a new driver to manual transmission driving the car. If I were to let someone drive a 6 speed and they've never drove one before, do you think its possible to go from 5th gear into reverse? That would be the end of the car if that happens I assume.
Has anyone ever heard of anything like this? I think I can see this happening. |

To engage reverse you have to press the shift lever down and then pull it into reverse. Not sure if there's a lockout or not when the car is at speed, but either way you'd have to be really stupid to do that.

while moving in 5th shifting to reverse would be virtually impossible and a big no-no. it would take some serious manhandling of the shifter. however, if stopped, going from 5th to reverse is harmless.

i dont believe there is a lockout, but its almost impossible for the gears to mesh because they are spinning in opposite direction and are non synchronized. all that will happen is that a ton of metal will be ground off the reverse gear and the life expectancy of the transmission will be drastically reduced

From past Z cars, 5th was directly below reverse. If instead of pulling towards yourself and down, I pulled down only and tried to go into reverse the syncro mesh gears made an awful grinding sound. I can not imagine anyone then muscling the car into reverse and letting go of the clutch.
With the 370 Z you also need to push down towards the ground on stick then all the way right then back, probably making an awful grinding sound too. This combination/maneuver is so difficult you will not do it, so stop worrying. If you are stalling from stops just bring the revs up to 2000 and slowly let out the clutch. Later you'll get the feel and will not need the tach or as many revs. |

I think about this sometimes when I jump back into my 5-speed VR-4 since reverse is in the same position as 6th in our Zs. Dont have to push the shifter in or anything to get into reverse so its kinda scary to think what could happen if I just had major brain fart and forgot which car Im driving!
