Stick or Automatic

I know then standard thinking around a sports car is Stick shift but I am looking to buy a 2010 370 and I am getting pretty lazy now in my 40's. I a pondering the automatic transmission because I have been told you could never match the shift speed of the automatic with a stick. Any thoughts comments?:tiphat:

Bought an automatic. Love it. 5 days out of the week when im tired i can just put it in drive and go. The other days when i feel like ripping i drop it into manual mode and bang out the gears.

I love the manual mode on the automatic. Allows you to freely redline with precision shifts

Jesse_Hunter 07-08-2010 11:00 AM

I had this mind set when I bought mine, which is why I bought a 6 speed.

There are days when I love shifting the gears, but (living in a city) most of the time I kind of wish I would have went with the auto. :/ The Z was alot harder to get used to then other manual trans I have driven. Also, there is quite a bit of clang and clunk to the tranny. I also noticed that compared to my mom's rx-8 which shifts like a hot knife through butter, the Z is alot stiffer. just food for thought Good luck with buy!

Jesse, I had an 02 Altima, and now a 10 Z (both manual) and they both clank and clunk. I think it's a Nissan "feature" :driving:

Depends. Are you a man or a woman?

Jeffblue 07-08-2010 11:41 AM

keep in mind, the synchro rev match makes it pretty easy. aslong as you can get it into gear from a stop, you are pretty much in ok shape if you use srm.

good point. I don't have SRM.

MawdR8 07-08-2010 12:16 PM

Personal preference! I would rather go with a true 6spd stick shift even on a Bimmer and turn down the SMG option. For every 10 people that say the stick shift is the only way to go on a sports car, there will be a few that will say today's autos are just as good and give the same feel in manual mode as a true stick. So it really comes down to what you want. IF you will be doing a lot of stop and go rush hour driving, sure the auto would be more convenient. But if you want to feel connected to your car, there is no comparison to a stick!

fairladyZ34 07-08-2010 12:36 PM

i would have liked to get mine in manual but at least i got a Z

Jordo! 07-08-2010 01:22 PM

Test drive both. The auto has full lock up in each gear and lightning fast shifts with the paddles (the auto-stick is pretty good too, actually) -- this is NOT your typical slushbox. A lot of "MT only" guys really like the AT.

ResQguy 07-08-2010 02:25 PM

I couldn't be happier with my AT. I'm in a lot of stop-and-go traffic every morning during my 1hr+ commute. Shifting gears a lot would drive me insane. Plus, the paddle shifters are pretty cool for those times when the road is a lot more open. AT all the way.

Nitex 07-08-2010 02:32 PM

Flappy paddles are fun in their own way. Its fun to slap through the gears like an F1 race car.. However the earlier comment about feeling connected is a very good point. In my own opinion, for recreational driving, the MT6 is the way to go for pure sports car hooliganism. If this is truly your daily driver and you have a long drive in the middle of rush hour /shrug i would consider the AT.
Just don't forget that you will have slightly lower HP numbers with the extra drivetrain loss. And if your a numbers kinda guy this may also sway your decision towards the MT6. The AT will be easier to launch, but somewhat less fun, again just my opinion. For me there really is nothing like dropping a gear, letting out the clutch and slamming on the gas :driving:

I would also suggest the MT if your going FI (turbo or SC) but i get the feeling that's not on the list. Either way, good luck with your decision, and welcome to the club!

Actually, because every gear locks up, the difference between the two is minimal -- only around 6 whp and 2 wtq -- that's like a 2-3% difference...

frost 07-08-2010 08:53 PM

Eh, buy whatever you like man. Don't let other people make up your mind for you. Being in your 40s means you don't have to follow "trends"

Kirkster 07-08-2010 09:06 PM

What is this "Automatic" you speak of...

There are 2 vehicles that should be automatic, the riding lawnmower and the wife's minivan.

The Z should not be confused with either.

Stick is the only way to go

I used to be all about MT but seriously I like this AT.

it is fast, manual mode is awesome and I like how it locks the gear, well except for when you too low in revs but still better than stalling.

I do wish I had the MT but the AT is perfectly fine.

Automatics are like training wheels for cars

fullmonty 07-08-2010 10:49 PM

Mines an auto, its great. Best of both worlds

nicknick 07-08-2010 11:00 PM

As I am interested in buying a 370Z, I went and test drove one. It was a 7sp auto. It turned me off. In manual mode it was great, very great. Most of my driving is done in normal auto mode though (if i had an auto). The accelerator pedal felt dead with no feel and very doughy response. Also as I was driving it the warning/hazard ligts starting flashing mysteriously then after approx 5 seconds just turned off. Power/acceleration/handling were all awesome. I will have to again drive the 6sp manaul that I fondly remember and drove sometime late last year.

gumpy 07-08-2010 11:30 PM

Get the manual before they stop existing... The day of no more manuals is not too far away...

I wouldnt say that but yeah use some MT cars before you get AT.

I really should ask the dealership if I can have a test drive with their MT roadster

zippin 07-09-2010 06:39 AM

Follow the simple rule of buying cars. Sport car = manual. All other vehicles = automatic. One of my best friends made a mistake of buying a vette with an automatic. It drove him nutts for 6 months, he know he made a big mistake. Sure enough he traded in his auto for a manual vette after six months, lost a bunch of money and some pride. This question comes up more than what time of oil should i use. I wish the mods would just add a big sticker to the entry page of this site. 370Z is a sports car, so make sure it's a MT.

Sounds like you are talking more about the effects the "VDC" has on the car, instead of differences between MT & AT.....:confused::confused:

So...all the next lamborghinis wont be sportscars?

:eekdance:

I personally find the whole MT=sportscar thing kinda stupid these days.

These arent slow sluggish gearboxes anymore. The only difference these days is that you cant stall(good thing) and that you don't move a stick around but use pedals on the steering wheel/tiptronicish stick(I actually don't know how they call that type of shifting these days).

I personally still prefer MT because of the whole going WOT slam the next gear. It feels awesome. but I then again prefer the downshifting with the AT. I know the syncro does the same but with the AT its so quick.

Especially whenever I get to drive the GT-R now THAT is a proper AT
