09 PG paint defects Help!

I recently bought a used 09 PG Touring sport with only 3500k. When I washed the car for the first time I noticed a lot of bird dropping etching damage and paint spots under the clear coat and could not remove them with clay bars compounds etc. Took my car to the dealer and they agreed to repaint my whole car, not for the bird dropping damage but the defect of the spots under the clear coat. My question is has anyone here accepted a whole car repaint job under warranty and was happy with the result? Or am I just better off getting rid of this car and get another one. The other option is to fight to get them to give me a new one but this is going to be a long uphill battle.

Thanks for the advice

unless you have another Z that you can buy without issue i would let the dealer paint the car and see how it turns out.

not sure if the value of the car will decrease if it's repainted, so might want to check into that before going ahead with the painting.

You're lucky if the dealer agrees to do anything under warranty (unless there's some special paint coverage that was purchased and transferred to you from the owner).

Letting bird poop dry, set, and stain the paint is a result of neglect, not defective paint.

Sounds like the same problem I had with my paint. Crazy thing was the dealer found that they had this same problem on many other Z's, just not to the same extent (maybe 2-3 per panel). Looked like bubbles underneath the clearcoat.

I finally agreed to a repaint, and the paint easily came out better than the other 370Z's they had on their lot, so I was relatively happy. Nissan did also throw in a 3 year maintenance plan, so that helped too. However, I wish tried to file some sort of diminished value claim with a lawyer. I threatened to, but they called my bluff.

In the end though, I'm happy it's all done and over with and I'm busy having a blast with my car.

The bird poop damage happened with the previous owner, he parked under a tree for the shade and messed up the car, they are not repainting the car for this reason. They are repainting because of the bubbles uner the clear coat.

Thanks flash, I will probably go ahead with the repaint and see how it turns out, other than this paint issue I love this car.

flash, did they repaint the door jams, if so did they tape over the VIN labels and you can tell its repainted? Or in your case you cant tell its repainted?

I can't tell if they repainted that area or not. I don't think they did. There is only one small spot on the front bumper that I noticed a few months afterwards where there is some overspray, but its so small and in a corner, I don't really care about it. Other than that one spot, I can't tell it's been repainted. I'm sure a professional could probably find things that indicate it was, or if one of those paint depth devices were used.

Oh, and FWIW, I let them replace my hood so they could try to investigate how this defect happened. They cut it in half apparently and sent half to Japan and half to their US headquarters (Nashville I think?).

Interesting, thanks for the info mine goes in for paint 7/12. Will be getting a loaner because they are saying they are taking around a month to coplete. Also I was told that most of the car is being taken apart lights, bumpers, emblems, mouldings. Did they tell you if they took yours apart?

sonic370 07-01-2010 07:37 PM

So how do you solve this well known problem?
What do you guys recommend to protect the paint.
I've only got 3500 miles on my M Blue is there some kind
of wax to apply or anything to do? are do we just keep
our fingers crossed and hope for the best.
I checked on the clear spray on bra they wanted 900.00!
I bought the black leather one but took it off after 1 week
it kills the looks of the front end. maybe its something we all
have to learn to live with.

Yep, they did the same thing for mine, and it also took about a month. Before you accept the job make sure you look at it under some really good fluorescent lights, as they tend to show everything. I found some issues with the clearcoat the first time, but luckily they were able to buff them all out.

Not sure what you mean. The problem we are talking about has been there since day 1, it's just kind of hard to notice.

For general protection nothing beats a clear bra. It's costly, but worth it IMHO, especially with our ultra soft paint and clear coat.

As far as the defect of bubbles under the clear coat, you need to inspect your paint VERY closely before you accept the car when you are buying it. The bird poop damage is mainly caused by neglect of letting bird poop dry on your paint under a hot sun. Althoug my opinion is that the paint on these 09 Z's is not very resistant to this and gets marked easily. An also wax your car once a month for more protection.
