400zx?
The question that I've been asking myself more and more often lately is this.
What if Nissan instead of doing the 370z design literally started reproducing the original Datsun 240z's but up to today's standards. Literally the looks would be IDENTICAL to the 240z except call it the 400zx with a 4.0L v8 engine with a sequential turbo setup (as opposed to the parallel set up with the 300zx I believe). Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my 370z and it's amazing but there was this nagging thought in the back of my head as to why this thing isn't any faster? More and more cars are "going turbo" or even forced induction in general and I think with a "stronger powerplant" the 370z wouldn't need a Porsche as it's goal . Let's face it ladies and gentleman. We've entered another "horsepower age" where Camry's come with 260+ horsepower and the Mustang GT which has been underpowered for a million years is now outperforming all of it's competition (Ok maybe that's slightly exaggerated...). Plus... it's also the "retro" age where everything is retro styled. |
Hmmm.. :icon08:

I think to answer your question in the simplest form would be that more and more cars are going "green". A turbo'd 4.0 V8 isn't exactaly going to be doing it's part when it comes to emission and mpg economy.
We actually have a pretty modern and efficient powerplant in the 370 and for the weight compared to other cars (like that Canadian Camaro), it's leading the charge in power to weight ratio. When all sorts of magazines and independent tests are calling it the "car of the year" and "best performance for the money", it probably stands to reason that the car isn't all that bad off. :twocents: |
Not a fan of retro styling... like the idea of a 400Z tho' :D
That said, allegedly the next Zed will be a hybrid... better make it fast AND green. |

only thing i can see happening to the Z34 anytime soon is Nissan switching to a direct injection version of the VQ37VHR during a mid-model refresh. that could push well over 350hp easy and probably boost mpg by at least 1 in the city and highway. but with all the issues DI has been having recently (especially turbo'd engines) i'd be kinda skiddish of it in a Z until it's been put through it's paces.
if you are speaking of the future "Z35" model, then who knows but most likely we will see a D.I. 6 cyl mild hybrid. battery assist but most likely not a full hybrid |
I sincerely hope the next z is not a bloody hybrid.

A rearview camera? They should put in a front cam for track days! |

What is wrong with the same engine but it having a electrical engine that helps it with using less fuel and going full electric in the city and the engine helping with torque during sporty driving possibly fixing the lack of low rev torque |

If you want to be environmental nut that is fine, but if you for one second think the current batteries are "efficient" you are mistaken. It takes way to much power to produce batteries still and we are only up to around 80%(ish) of being able to reuse them fully. |
