I check my dipstick like once a wheel, i hae like 1700 miles on my car, and i'm right in the middle between the two lines. I haven't added any oil, but it looks as though i haven't burnt any, even through the break in period, am i just checking wrong, because i kind of EXPECTED to lose oil. i take the dipstick out, wipe it off, and then put it back in and pull it out and read where the oil came up to, and its right in the middle.

Reading this guy's posts, I think I've figured out how his engine could have run out of oil without him noticing...

But on a serious note, it's very, very obvious when you drop that much oil via a large leak. First of all, you'll literally start seeing a black trail behind your car (if you even check your rear view). Simultaneously you'll start noticing a huge blue cloud of smoke behind you as the oil starts coating the exhaust and burning off.
Sadly I've gone through that due to a failed turbo oil return fitting my fault, but the rod and main bearings were OK afterward.

On a positive note, this thread scared the crap out of me so I went outside to my work parking lot and checked the oil.
3/4 between L and H. Thanks OP!

lets check the oil level at least once every 2 weeks. it's not like my G's dipstick where i have to snake the stick in... the Z's dipstick is right there.
while cold in the morning. yellow handle. pull out, wipe. dip stick back, count to 5 in japanese (ichi, ni, san, faux phalen, go). then pull out. oil to be between 2 dots. |

I ran my car very low on oil years ago, due to a leak in the cam cover. It was driving more or less fine until fairly suddenly I noticed a big drop in power while going uphill, and the car water temp went up, I pulled over within 1 mile and checked it out, found nothing on dipstick, got some oil and discovered I was 4qts low. I refilled the oil and the car ran fine for years. I never noticed anything until that one long pull uphill. Had I kept going another mile or two, I might have completely ruined the engine.

Something just doesnt add up.
1. If your mechanic forgot to add the oil, you car would seize and you wouldn't be able to drive it for 3 months. 2. If you had a leak (any sort of seal leak), you should notice wet oil spots. A main seal leak, just doesnt make any sense with the age of your car. 3. Burning up oil, you would notice carbon deposit on your exhaust. (i.e. your exhaust tip should be a yellow and/ or black) Along with smoke every time you drive it. 4. Im out of ideas. Someone should queue in the Castrol commercial now! |
