$40k all said and done is a hell of a lot of money. I needed the toy car to be no more than 30% of my yearly income to be "affordable", since I support a family of 5 (+dog, +cat) on my income - which means I had to wait until age 40 to replace my Camaro SS. My wife plans to start a career in the next few years (she never worked-married me instead) - at least a part time hobby job - but her making $20-50k per year, over 10-20 years makes a huge difference on the bottom line (her income could nearly pay for 3 kids to go to college), so her going back to work is the main justification I have for spending this much on a car. Also, given my professional position I can expect solid income growth - again it took me to age 40 to get solid confidence in long term employment and income growth. I am suprised that so many under age 30 will spend this much money on a car - it seems affordable to young people because they have no real expenses yet - such as a family or household - and at this age you are not very well established in life. I hope you under 30's have very good educations, master's degrees in business, law, medicine, or science. The wonderous economic growth of the 80's and 90's may not continue, if not opportunities will be limited, the professional world is becomming more competetive every year. My company (world class engineering/technology) will only look at the top 1% of students from ONLY the top universities, and most new hires have master's or PhD's and do at least a 1 year internship before graduation to prove their worth. That will get you a $65k starting salary.

I believe most who are over 40 don't owe a lot on the car (ie: small loans or cash deals).

Ditto, in my area the starting salary for a police officer is $80K a year then after overtime its closer to $100K. And yes thats in the first year of employement. For that all you need is a 4 year degree or 4 years in the military. If I got a MBA, and the cop down the street with no college education was making more than me, my *** would be getting a new job.

I won't call it my dream car, but it is a milestone for me as it is the first new car I've ever bought for cash. It was a nice feeling getting the clear title for the car in the mail a few days after picking it up.
Unfortunately it took until I was 50 to accomplish the feat. The worst part of driving the Z for me is to see the disappointed look on a ladies' face when she was expecting a young hot guy to be driving and sees me instead. lol |

I wouldn't EXACTLY call the Z my DREAM car..but I did know I wanted it after first hearing about it's production. I got the first Z on the lot at first release and am ecstatic I got it right away. But it's still not my dream car. I'd love an Audi R8 in pearl white haha... but the Z has enough lust for me I realized I don't need a 130k+ car to make me happy...until I win the lottery. All in all...YES, I love my Z!

32-39k a year really isn't "terrible" in Florida / Georgia, etc BUT in states like New Jersey it is "terrible" because the COST OF LIVING is WAY higher.

Everyone I know makes at least double what the cops make in my area. Cost of living isn't relevant in this discussion.

The title is misleading, however after 30+ car in my live time a don't consider my Z a dream car at this stage of my life but one more car on my list.
I might consider a dream car within a future budget a brand new M3 or M5. However a real DREAM car would be the likes of Porsche, Ferrari, Bugatti, Lamborghni, etc.
