The BMW X5 3.0 gets only 15/21 w/260hp. I am real happy that the Z did not go this route. It gets to 60 in just under 8 secs, I think our Z's will only see an X5 in our mirrors. Yes it is heavy but still no great mileage for the performance.

I was looking for performance out of the Z and thought the mileage was ok for the performance it has.

this has nothing to do with comparing the z to the x5 , that was just an example used to illustrate how low the mileage for the z is.. and if you checked your stats you'd know that the 3.0si gets 17/23 and the 4.8i gets 15/19.. bmwusa.com

370Z gets BETTER gas mileage than 350Z. Anyone cries about gas mileage should buy a corolla or the new Honda fit. IMO, those who buys sport cars (coupes), gas mileage is the least of their worries.

Here's another thread that has more discussions and responses

If you look in Porsche advertisements now hell even all car ads they talk about gas mileage but imo its only because that is the hot topic now. No one really cares I think it is more of an afterthought

I'm not too worried about mpg with the Z, I've got an xB for that.
18/26 is not bad IMHO could be worse, we could be in the days of -200hp V8 domestics with worse mpg.

I'm quite happy that companies like Nissan have striven to provide performance, with weight reduction and an mpg that doesn't have me filling up every 100 miles.

28 is the middle of what they got for testing. You can do better than that. Just depends on your driving habits.

C5 Corvettes say they're supposed to get 18/25, but my friends are getting 32-36 on the freeway average. And they're not exactly driving like grandpa.

But to get the best mileage, keep the RPMs below 3500 and you'll get excellent economy.

I follow the same rules with my cars. The 300zx averages 20MPG and I almost NEVER drive on the freeway with it. My Solstice does about 25/41. GM says that it's supposed to get 21/36.

Again, it's all about your driving habits.

+1. My '03 Mustang GT rated at something 26mpg highway would easily get 30mpg on the highway. I'd imagine the Z could do the same if you were taking it easy.

It is about hp from an engine for the fuel economy delivered. And I think the Z does a good job compared to the BMW 3.0 that you used in your example. Most here are buying their Z for maximizing performance versus value (economy being one factor of value) and like its predecessors, the 370 strikes the balance up towards the top of the list.

You need to recheck bmwusa, the X5 3.0 is:

Fuel consumption City/Highway 15/21 mpg BMW North America . Just trying to make facts, facts.

Hey....who cares about MPG ........If you do.....get an economy car.......
My Enzo gets 12 MPG when I run it hard.......

But if you do WANT TO KNOW "EXACTLY' what kind of MPG you get....then......

Sorry if this sounds like a know-it-all....but The way that I have always measured MPG is easy......I fill up and force-fill.......the tank.....dont worry about doing this, I have been doing it for decades and never had a problem with any car. By force-filling I mean: After you think your tank is full, I shake the car and let the gas level go down. Any car will hold and extra 2 to 3 gallons..........it may take about 5 minutes to get all the air out of the tank. By doing this, you get an accurate level to refill the tank on the next fill.
Record the miles till the next fill.........and then you have an accurate level to measure from...........the next time you force-fill your are going to know that the level is the same as before.....as in FULL

Say you go 350 miles and then force-fill again.....it takes 13 gallons.....since you know the tank has been FULL to the same point...you know that you have used 13 gallons....and your MPG was 26.92 MPG

To me this is the most accurate way to get an MPG for a car........I guess I am Squirrly but I do this almost every tank....

I'd never force-fill the tank, but aside from that, that's the same way I get my mpg. Some tanks don't need to force-fill. The pressure builds up the same in the tank assuming A) You're on a level ground and B) It's the same temperature outside. But the changes aren't enough to throw the mileage off enough to be seriously noticeable.

The pumps stop when a certain pressure has been reached in the tank. If it's off from pump to pump, it won't be more than 1/10th of a gallon which isn't enough to throw off the calculations that much. It's reasonable to say that your MPG is +/- 0.2 MPG.

Also, you should never top off your tank:
Topping Off

its not really low for a 3.7 litter v6 engine... I mean, yeah it matters on your driving habbits, but its still better than the 350z.
My friend owns a g35x sedan and his getting 16mpg off that. >.< "look on the bright side"
