Having a service history is a huge advantage if you ever go to privately sell the vehicle. You CAN document buying the oil, record the mileage, and throw that into the folder with the rest, but that doesn't always happen if your hands are covered in oil and you're tired/sweaty. |

I think your right, but the dealerships are just like other business some better or more honest than others. For the record the dealership where i bought my z at charges 75.00 for mobil 1 oil change. For service i tend to go there just in case i have a problem they can't say the car was never serviced right. |

Exactly....My dealership offers free oil changes for life....Unlikely I'll ever take advantage of this, but it's definitely a value added perk for the non-enthusiast purchasers..

Let me translate out of dealership speak: A) An oil change for the Z is $140 at the dealership B) A 7,500 mile service is $310, but the oil change is free, so $170 The only "Free" oil change is one that is included in a service package like the 7,500 mile, which also includes checking fluids and a tire rotation. But tire rotations don't apply to the Z, so your basically paying 30$ for someone to look at the 4 or 5 fluids. Notice the lingo, CHECK the fluids, not refill them if need be. Oh yea, forgot to mention, they put your car through the car wash too! A full tank of gas makes a top of the line machine car wash all of 8$ so to me thats not that much of a value. No thanks, for 85$ i can get 6 quarts of redline and an oil filter and do it myself. Last edited by rarwz; 06-10-2010 at 08:56 AM. Reason: added car wash |

The thing about having a "dealer maintained" car being useful would apply more to regular cars not speciality cars in my opinion. A non-enthusiast would rarely buy a used Z, mostly out of the concern that he won't be able to tell how badly the previous owner beat/rev'd it, only someone who knows their car-tech would look into buying a used Z, in which case he would know that its okay to not have a history of oil changes at the dealer...
(Also, what I noticed at my dealership - Smithtown Nissan - was actually the other way round from what people sayin here... they rush things to get more volume cars.. the smaller shop guy is a nice hard working guy who does a more meticulous job..).. it takes the same 'time' at either place. I guess another factor plays for me, I'm not a fan of 'dropping it off for the day' be it at a dealer or smaller shops after seeing videos of people not doing jobs in big places (check out on utube) at all or just other OCD fears.. |

When I purchase my Z I also bought a maintenance program for oil changes. You get free oil changes, but in my case, since I use synthetic, I get a discount. I pay around $40 for an oil change at the dealership. Not sure if they actually do anything, but next time i will marks the oil filter to make sure. Oil color looked like honey, so it looked like they actually did change it - with synthetic as I requested I hope...
