Either I'm an oblivious jackwad and missed it in my owner's manual, or I'm an oblivious jackwad for not looking for it when testing the vehicle before purchase. Seems like such a basic thing... To be able to pop the trunk for a passenger who has just exited the vehicle...

Am I missing something really obvious?
I agree. My 300ZX has the release right next to the driver-side door on the floor - a perfect location and extremely convenient. I have to open my trunk frequently for inspection where I work and its a huge pain to have to get out of the car and open it for the guards who think I'm a giant douche. There needs to be a button

...and if you push and hold the lock button long enough, the top will go down on the roadster. It's designed to let all of the hot air out of the car before you climb in. Very snazzy!
