That is a good question though I'm not sure the result would have been any different since the force was directly vertical. They did this test for free and I know I can't get another off the cuff.

The taller the column is for a given diameter the weaker it is in a straight down compressive load. At failure the pipe would buckle. However, if the pin is weaker than the buckling load that would fail first.
