What's your average MPG for your 370z?

You actually have it backwards, if you like short shifting you want a Z or higher. You know the Z has decent displacement. Lower shift points when not using the happy pedal make sense. No different then the 1-4 skip shift on the small block chevy: you can save fuel and you don't need to unleash the hounds between every light (though it is fun).

In a smaller displacement car, assuming similar gearing, you won't be able to short shift nearly as much, and 6th gear < 40 MPH will lug a Miata, but not a Z.

Both cars enjoy a good flogging : they are sports cars for a reason, and respond accordingly. You don't need either, you just want and enjoy them
