You sold your Z and you also like displacement and torque. Then you purchased a GTI, which is a FWD car. There is a fundamental conflict between your interest in torque and your choice of vehicle, not because of the vehicle itself, but because of its transmission layout. That's where the fail lies. I'm just pointing it out; not trying to invoke any negative sentiments about your new car.

Also, I think you're incorrect in assuming that we are a bunch of brand fanboys. No one is bashing the GTI as a car. It's an awesome looking car. I've never personally driven one, but I know its abilities have been lauded by the platitudes of many a car magazine editor.
There is nothing wrong with tq and FWD, its really no difference than in a RWD. Enough tq makes both spin tires. A LSD will do wonders for both, the FWD will have less drivetrain loss than the RWD and after having basically the same engine in a 4 cyl car as the GTI I can say that I had 250+ hp and 300+ tq and the car was very quick. I did 5.5 sec 0 60s all day long. And when the turbo kicked in at 2500 rpms the tq was awesome to feel. It just lost its power in the upper rpms. And thats why I went to the Z for now. But I did love the MPG I got from my last car. Plus the car handled snow pretty good too.
