Need Help...
Horrible day !! Was driving to Chicago from Marshfield ,WI..Out of nowhere a cop pulled up..he tagged me @ 94...just said, Maam I won;t even listen to u... speeding at 94 in a 65 limit...so right now I have to appear in court, have a suspended licence and a fine of $300 plus..This is my first ticket...Any ideas as to what to expect..another thing is, am planning to visit family in California in a week for couple of months and the court date is in 3 w2eeks....what do I do...
He put 6 points on my citation...anything I can do to make this situation better ? What happens if the cop does;nt show up and do I have to have a lawyer and how much does it cost ... and the cop told me,I have a mandatory court appearence ,can I avoid that ? And he said my license is suspended for 2 weeks in Wisconsin ,does this mean I can drive in IL ? Last edited by priya007; 05-01-2010 at 02:56 PM. |

First court appreance is usually the time to plea. If you plea not guilty then they will schedule a trial. If you plea guilty then you can pay the fine. Read the ticket most places allow you to send the fine in by mail if you are not going to contest the ticket. Now I've never dealt with suspension of points so before you call a lawyer call the court clerk. The court clerk won't help get out of a ticket but they may tell you availible options, including changing your appearence date.

Hire a lawyer that is familiar with the court that you have to go to because they are usually familiar with the prosecutor and judge. They should be able to work out a deal which would make you have to take defensive driving or something rather than have a suspended license.

At the first apprearence the cop doesn't need to be there unless in your state they do the trial at that time. The cop is the only witness forthe state. If he doesn't show for the tial then the state doesn't have a witness. It's ip to the judge to find in you favor or set a new trial date.

You expect people on this forum to provide you with a cost quote on attorney's fees? Umm...that's not how it works. You need to find a traffic lawyer in your area, and then get a cost quote directly from him (or her).

Oh btw, the fine, points on your license, and attorney's fees isn't the end of it. This is also going to most likely result in a significant increase to your insurance premiums. Not trying to further depress you; just want you to be prepared the next time your insurance comes up for renewal.
