shifting gear problems. burning the clutch?
 

Hey guys the 370z is my first manual car and I had some questions. Sometimes in the city I speed up to 5k or higher rpms going from 2nd to 3rd cuz some1 is on my ***. I was wondering, if I speed up to 5k, push in the clutch, shift to 3rd, can I drop the clutch slowly? Or will I be burning the clutch? and btw, I don't want to be speeding up anymore on 3rd gear. Any help would be great.

You have to release the clutch as soon as 3rd gear is engaged and give gas, what you are doing is burning the clutch.

This is also my first manual car so correct me if i'm wrong, but you can release the clutch a little slower at 3k and below, above that I usually try to release it faster

If you have SynchroRev on you should be able to release the clutch slower without giving it gas, because the computer will automatically give it gas for you so that the flywheel spins at the same rate as the clutch. But I just release it quickly. If you don't have SynchroRev then I can't help you because the 370Z is my first manual and I've never driven it without the SynchroRev off.

If I wanted to drive smoooothly I would clutch, shift, and do a mix of throttle and releasing the clutch slowly.

but if I wanted to go speedy and didn't care about being smooth I would just clutch, shift release and WOT

theres no need to go super slow off the clutch from 2nd-3rd. the only time that has any real use is N-1 and 1-2.

1-2 should be slow? why I just do those like I would any other gear than N-1

i like to ease of the clutch slower than i would in higher gears. it gives a smoother shift. i shift faster than i would just getting the car moving, but slower than any other gear. when i drive my friends 87 Z that is what the car seems to want.

Dropping it faster is actually better, and I'll explaine why. Next time you are in your car, keep an eye out on the tach needle the second you let go of the gas. It will actually hover there for a second or two before its starts to drop down. That is your window for smooth shifting. If you can engage the next gear in that window, your shifts will be much smoother, and less strain on your clutch. It's kind of hard to explain, but it will make sense after a while.
