Dropping it faster is actually better, and I'll explaine why. Next time you are in your car, keep an eye out on the tach needle the second you let go of the gas. It will actually hover there for a second or two before its starts to drop down. That is your window for smooth shifting. If you can engage the next gear in that window, your shifts will be much smoother, and less strain on your clutch. It's kind of hard to explain, but it will make sense after a while.
