Z + Jews = Win!
So I've had my Z for about 3 weeks now, and of course I've been going through the normal process of showing it to friends, letting them sit in it, etc. 2 of my friends that I've shown it to so far are Jewish. Each one of them upon climbing into my car took some change from their pockets and threw it on the floormat. Apparently some sort of Jewish tradition for wishing good luck or something.
Anyway...if I can track down a few more of my Jewish friends I might be able to get myself a Slurpee or something. :icon17: |
haha!
I'm Jewish. Not familiar with that 'tradition' though I'll ask my in-laws who may know better.
The other alternative is that they were giving you donations to buy a Ferrari next time. |
Haha very nice man I had so many people throw change in my car for goodluck that I actually ended up gathering it all and storing it elsewhere cuz all the clinking sounds of coins hitting each other when turning. I'll tell you this though it's certainly not limited to Jewish tradition.
Apparently I need better friends.
Slurpee sounds good.
My friends look around the floor of my vehicles and steal change :shakes head:
Wikipedia is your friend.....although it doesn't say it's a Jewish tradition it's called Car Coining:
There is a practice in New Jersey and New York of tossing a few coins onto the floor of a newly purchased car as a sign of good luck. This practice originated as a practical one. Because of the area's many toll roads, many drivers would carry change in their cars. The friends and family of the new car owner would throw coins onto the floor of the new car so if the driver ever ran out of his own money, he could always reach down and find some extra money on the floor. Thar ya go! |

Take note that so far the only people in this thread who have had this happen are in New York....just like the Wikipedia article said....New York & New Jersey. Makes it seem more legit, IMO.
I'm from NY originally and I remeber my Irish Father-in-law throwing coins in my first new car.
I'm from NY, my whole family is Irish, and every new car I have ever owned people have thrown coins in!
yea that's def not just a jewish thing, coming from a jew.
I got some cheap friends apparently
yea, definitely a tradition I'm familiar with and thought it was done everywhere... I was annoyed with loose change in my brand new Z but then my friend/haircutter threw a $10 on the floor... that, I liked.

Never heard of this before..

Well I'm from NYC and I'm Irish and nobody ever threw coins at me, in a car out out of a car. Need better friends....
I'm from Virginia. People down here just throw empty beer cans on the floor of your car. It's not really a good luck thing.

my girlfriend is Jewish and the first time she jumped into my Z, she threw me something else.....and I shot her something back in a happy ending!
My friends dad threw like 3 quarters into my car when I first got it. Deff not a Jewish thing.
My friends ARE NOT jewish, money under the floor mat is suppose to be good luck when you first get a car. Like I said they are NOT jewish though so...no coins here, bills only usually 5's
if someone threw change into my car and its all over the floor... .... i dont know...
id kinda be pissed???? |
I'm an Italian in NY. When I got my Z I had coins, dollar bills, 10s, 20s thrown in my car. It's a pretty common tradition here.
Living in NJ, and reading this thread I have come to the conclusion. My friends are eaither:
A. Cheap B. D-Bags C. All of the above. |
My wife is Jewish and her mom and grand dad sat in my car soon after I purchased, I got nothing so I imagine it isn't a Jewish thing. However, it is really a cool idea, I will certainly do that for all my friends from here on out, as is typical, cool things originate from New York (dammit it's the concrete jungle wear dreams are made of).
I'm glad I'm on the west coast. If you threw anything into my car I'd tell you to pick it the eff back up. :rofl2:
So if I was in NY or NJ I would go to the dealers and test drive a new car and then come home and show my friends and say its my new car, get the coins, take it back bring home another one and keep going like that till they run out of coins. LOL.
my Jewish friends look for **** in my car they can sell.

I know here in texas people tell me I have a lot of change on the floor and ask why I have a dollar tied to the shifter. They aren't familiar. |

Been seeing this done since I was a little kiddo living in the PLANET(BK). Seems to involve all cultures and religions in the 5 boros. It occurs here in Jerz also.
