Default black box question, probably a dumb one...

OK I saw something about black boxes being put into cars to track RPM's and other driving parameters that they can use to void your warranty. Im pretty sure they are not putting them into cars yet but as i plan on driving the car as close to its limits as i can get i was wondering if anyone knew if they were on the Z. Thanks for the help! and for not making me feel like a tool....

umm.. 370z comes equipped with black box. It clearly states in the manual

Anyone know more about the EVENT DATA RECORDER ?

350z / 370z Event Data Recorder (EDR)

Take all this information with a "grain of salt" but be warned. This kind of recorder would almost be useless if it needed an event to set it off. After all a crash could instantly cut the power off. My guess is, it's always recording, maybe only 30 seconds over and over again but still recording. So maybe a warranty buster? maybe. You probably can tell I don't trust what they say about not recording under normal circumstances. I don't, normal might mean when the car is not running, OK just kidding but do read about it so you know.

EVENT DATA RECORDERS (EDR)

This vehicle is equipped with an Event
Data Recorder (EDR). The main purpose of
an EDR is to record, in certain crash or near
crash-like situations, such as an air bag
deployment or hitting a road obstacle, data
that will assist in understanding how a
vehicle’s systems performed. The EDR is
designed to record data related to vehicle
dynamics and safety systems for a short
period of time, typically 30 seconds or less.
The EDR in this vehicle is designed to
record such data as:
. How various systems in your vehicle
were operating;
. Whether or not the driver and passenger
safety belts were buckled/fastened;
. How far (if at all) the driver was
depressing the accelerator and/or
brake pedal; and,
. How fast the vehicle was traveling.
. Sounds are not recorded.
These data can help provide a better
understanding of the circumstances in
which crashes and injuries occur. NOTE:
EDR data are recorded by your vehicle only
if a nontrivial crash situation occurs; no
data are recorded by the EDR under
normal driving conditions and no personal
data (e.g. name, gender, age and crash
location) are recorded. However, other
parties, such as law enforcement, could
combine the EDR data with the type of
personally identifying data routinely acquired
during a crash investigation.
To read data recorded by an EDR, special
equipment is required and access to the
vehicle or the EDR is needed. In addition to
the vehicle manufacturer and NISSAN
dealer, other parties, such as law enforcement,
that have the special equipment, can
read the information if they have access to
the vehicle or the EDR.

^^^^I appreciate the links, thanks. After reading them I still am wondering if the dealership can use this to void the warranty? I may have missed it if so I apologize, also since I’m still doing my research on numerous car models before I decide what car to spend 40k on I do not own a Z yet and therefore do not own an owner’s manual to search through.... Thanks for the help!

I have not heard about the 370 but I know that some GTRs had the warranty void for tracking, mods, drag, etc.

I have enough problem with big brother watching me already when I'm on base... Now it just feels like I'm being monitored wherever I go. So what happens when someones on a closed course and crashes. Technically the computer isn't going to know the difference whether your on a track or at a streetlight... Who's to say the data can't be used against you?

If you have onstar, it'll mark the GPS coordinates.

Another reason not to buy a Chevy.

Yep, and you just knoooow they can record that data so if you have an accident, they can replay the events leading up to it to report if you were at fault.

Just like since (here in AZ) texting while driving is now illegal. Which means they will pull your phone records and check to see if you recieved/sent any texts just before an accident.

I especially think its completely retarded, when I pull up to the gate, hand the guy (a civillian no less) my id, and he hands it back to me in .02 seconds... I'm like, did you even look at it... How can you tell its real in that little time. Seriously dude?! Thank god your not charged with anything important...

LoL I loved it when I'd open everything up in my tC for them to inspect, I'd pop the trunk and the guy would walk back there and I'd have 2x S10L7's in a ported box (which basically took up my whole trunkspace lol) And he'd be like... "Oooook, Guess you can't put anything back here even if you wanted to, your good to go."

How is it that 90% of the posters on this thread seem to be military lol apparently it instills the fear of being watched by the man into us

I know that one time I forget to leave my gun at my house before going into work is going to be the day the random inspection happens.....
