2011 Mustang GT... I think I need to re-think my next car
Hey guys, I've been Z'less for the past 2 horribly long years, but finally I'm back in a position to buy a car and I've been amazed at all the great cars in the $30K range. Motor trend just released some figures on the the new 2011 Mustang GT 5.0 and it looks like pure sex. The numbers are so good in fact that they have made me look away from the beautiful 370z. The only number the 5.0 hasn't bested the Z in is in lateral grip at .94G which is still outstanding! Take a look at this article and please share your opinions on the new Stang compared to the 370z.
P.S. I still think the Z looks better and has a better interior layout, but that's about all I can think of in the Z's favor. One article said the 5.0's interior was approaching Audi territory... Article: 2011 Ford Mustang GT Premium First Test - Motor Trend |

While the feel is quite different (the Z feels and is a little more nimble), the Mustang still has loads of grip and can attack on a road course. Of course it's going to absolutely own down the strip, and if the 5.0 responds to bolt ons like the 3v 4.6 did, it's going to be a monster with an intake, exhaust, and a tune. |
|
I left a Mustang for a Z. Loved my stang, love my Z. If you wanna drag, buy a stang. If you want handling the Z is the way to go.
|
Well the 2011 Mustang GT 5.0 should bring back that real power of those years back in the 80s.
|
It'll be a beast. Even the v6 will put up strong numbers. Still love my Z. I'm not a fan of American cars, but ford has really gotten it's **** back together. I'm sure anyone who gets it will LOVE it as much as I love my Z.
|
Very impressive numbers. I really like that Grabber Blue color.
Interior looks pretty good too. I still prefer the Z to this but I understand the temptation for some current Z owners. |
VERY VERY impressive numbers. I personally have never drive mustangs but one of the problem I think buying a mustang is that you'll have 6 other Mustang GT in your same block. There's no exclusiveness. Everyone and their cousins, uncles and nephews have one! That's the ONLY thing I never liked about it. I like my car a little more exclusive ;). If those specs are correct, this new 5.0 will be a very fun to drive car. GO FOR IT
|
I traded an 08 Mustang Bullitt for my Z, and I love my Z but I will always have a thing for mustangs...
|
very impressive numbers and overall review
either the Mustang GT or the 370Z will likely replace my current 350. The 3600 lb curb weight however is a few hundred pounds more than I would like. Also I think the styling of the 370 is far superior to the GT. |
apparently great car to come. Still, I'm not convinced on American cars (just my opinion) yet.
|
still a 12.8 1/4 mile at 110 mph is in base Corvette territory
|
Nice power numbers on the Mustang, but I think the styling is awful.

Still, that is pretty damn fast. |
Look it's a great car. Definitely one to consider. Both cars have great reasons to choose them. Bottom line drive the cars you'd want to own and pick the one you like the most. You gonna have to live with it. And never look back.
|
Too bad I love them twisties!

on a more serious note, seems supercharging is going to be a must if we plan on running these things, damn. |

I used to have a 5.0 GT. It was already modded, but I owned it for 6 months and sold it. Could not EVER really enjoy the shitty interior, the ancient body design, and the crappy rear suspension.
While I appreciate the effort, my 1990 300ZX outhandled and outmaneuvered the 5.0 back in the day. I like the sound and potential of the old 5.0, but they rated them at 225 hp from the factory. So weak compared to my Z32 that had a 3.0 V6. |

I say to anyone... get whatever you like, and call it a day! Who cares what anyone else has! :tiphat: |

We'll never win the displacement battle. |

That's what it comes down to. Quit worrying about what everyone else has and enjoy what YOU do. If you worry about what the next guy has or what they think about you, you'll NEVER be happy! |

Being a Mustang officianado that I am:
1969 Musatng Grande 1996 Mustang 3.8L 1997 Mustang Cobra 2003 Mustang "Terminator" Cobra 2005 Mustang GT 2006 Mustang GT "Mach 1 Tribute" 2007 Shelby Mustang GT I still think the 2010+ backend design is absolutely hideous!! :barf: They should have kept the S197 (2005-2009) backend design. |
Wow for the V8 and wow to the V6, you can't caught sleeping on the V6 version.(5.1 to 60@13.7@ 102mph)!

You can join the Camaro Owners an have a differing color, so the best way to find your car in a parking lot is to hit the alarm a few times. You can tell yourself your car is special....not rare but special.
Imagine how many Stangs are out there already, and only owners will be able to tell the difference in the year or engine packages. 10k Zs or so in '09 probably the same numbers again this year. Latest Camaro production numbers (April 09) - Camaro Forum - 2010 Camaro 2011 Camaro / Camaro Z28 SS Forums - Camaro5.com I think the last page says about 30k Camaros so far and GM is hoping for 100k units a year ,do your think Ford wants a piece of that market, how many Mustangs will they build? Hurray for the generic muscle car, change your rims so yours will be a bit different for the other 3 on your block. |
I just looked at it for the first time...First impressions:
Looks exactly like the current 500+ Mustangs I see on the street today. No major body overhaul from first glances, initial impressions. If you're looking to blend in with the general population I guess this is good. Interior looks cheaper than my 03 Liberty. Actually, it reminds me of the Chrysler 300 interiors. Cheap city. Blah plastic and ENOUGH with the throwback gauges. Upon watching the video linked above, I couldn't help but notice body roll as well as the complete nosedive the car makes under hard braking. Looks real sloppy. Sure the numbers are impressive. But what are your intentions? Drag strip? Daily driver? I think those should be the deciding factors when weighing the Mustang and 370. |
Also just on a footnote if we SC our 370z, which is another 8k give or take, then our 370z price just went to 40k+, depending on the package you bought it at, and you're putting down about the same power levels for the 32k Mustang. Also you won't have all the overheating issues more than likely and probably not the brake lockup issues. Hmmm..
|
Looks like with all the defectors over to the mustang the 370z will be more exclusive

I owned a (new) ’95 Mustang and it had zero problems…..loved that car! The new 5.0 stang is a gorgeous car and 0 to 60 in 4.5 and 13.0 in the ¼ miles are great stock numbers! My ONLY complaint is the non independent rear axle. Yes it is faster than the stock Z, but it’s a four seater….if you want a four seater, it’s the best bang for the buck for 2011, Hands down!! And like AK stated….everyone and their mother is going to be driving one!! Has anyone else noticed how ford stock has more than quadrupled in the past year…..Ford is a great American car company.

Yea.. but all those magazine benchmark racers in HS(at least in my area) have parent's who buy them any car they want. So I'm sure they'll still be getting the mustangs. And besides my 370z it's a rare day I see any other in my area.
|
I live in the Z capital... Been seeing 5-6 370s a day lately.
And around these parts 350s are just as popular as Mustangs. Though the Porsche 911 and BMW 3 series are by far the most popular rides in Northern VA. :D |
pure numbers is 1 thing that makes a car...
IMO the styling and handling of the 370 outweighs the performance gain of the mustang....I personally think the stang is pretty ugly.... Also, it sounds like every man and his dog in the US has a stang? Probably like how here in Aus everyone drives Ford Falcons and Holden Commadores... I could have bought a FPV GT for a slightly better 0-100kph time but I refuse to because they are so common and don't feel as special. As others have noted before, the 370 is a little more exclusive (well in my area it is). |

Without too many costly options its a great preformance bargin the engine and drivetrain will be great, but the interior and even exterior styling will never be up to Z standards, as well as handling and build quaility. I've owned 4 firebirds and 1 camaro, I respect the mustang but I'm on a new path now. Just give me a detuned GTR powerplant or a 5.6 liter V8 out of the Titain and the mustang will just fade away.......
