370z vs...... THE Snow
Oh god it was a complete disaster.
First I couldn't get the door open because the automatic window rolldown didn't work because the windows were frozen shut. Then after a minute of struggling getting out of my parking spot, I got stuck completely at my apartment's parking entrance. Started one dude helping me then grew to >>7<< people pushing my car out of the ice. Note this was WITH a ton of weight in my trunk. Those damn summer tires sure didn't help  Now my Z's just parked in some random spot and now I'm waiting for my friend to pick my *** up. |
^^ wow...what a start of a day...7 ppl.... to many fingerprints...lol
got to invest in winter tires and a shovel |
Yea what do you expect though, the tires are summer only.
|
Hopefully this is the last winter storm before I move back to Los Angeles.
|
speaking of winter storm... i got hit by one this morning
|
Thank goodness for a garage!
|
Wow that sounds miserable. We just got hit with a storm and cars were all over the place, but I didn't see any Z's/G's bold enough to try to drive in this weather.
I wonder if a set of blizzak's will do much good? |
The only thing out of the ordinary I saw out today was an E46 M3 on snow tires. Luckily my beater car made it through the ice and snow just fine. I think the guy above me probably had it much worse in Cincinnati! I hear you guys are on level 3 emergency. (for non-locals: meaning that police can ticket you for being out on the roads without a certain excuse)
|
Man I am happy I live in a desert when I hear stories like this :).
|
I haven't seen any snow tires that really fit the 19x10 inch rims. I have an alternate snow vehicle but plan to buy set of all season tires (eg Michelin Pilot A/S) so that I can at least have some decent cold weather performance.
My 370 isn't due to arrive until mid Feb. I'll try to baby it this winter on existing tires and save some money for tire/wheel purchase this fall. |

las vegas and los angeles FTW lol |
What's your Z doing spending the night out in the cold anyway? :icon17:
|
We had a snowstorm here as well....there was an F430 spider goin about 15 mph on the Hutchinson parkway...

I think awhile back I saw those new M5's trying to get out of a parking lot with 6 inches of snow. |
I'm debating over this issue as we speak. I just moved to Jersey and bought a $950 crapcar because I'd like to buy a new one in a few weeks (the usual suspects Camaro, 370z, GenCoupe etc) and what keeps me from actually going to a Nissan dealer is the winter issue. I mean, I'd of course get a set of winter/all season tires, but is that enough for a 370?
I've been driving a Mustang rental over the last few weeks and didn't really have any problems driving it in the snow. Is that in any way comparable to a 370? |
Snow tires FTW.
|
It is comparable because of the rear wheel drive but the Z has quite a bit more torque.
So the mustang is a mild version......LOL |
thats why i love where i live! CALIFORNIA!
|
That's why I have a 4x4 Dodge Ram 1500 too! I have driven in the ice at least a dozen times and it did okay as long as I went slow.
|
My 370Z will be my only car so I will probably have to either put some all-seasons on it or get some base rims and put winter tires on them.
I owned a Mustang GT with more power and torque than the 370 and it was just fine in the snow (with all-seasons). Just had to be very careful. Of course the best thing to do will be to just avoid driving in the snow. But we all know that's not always possible. |

I was in my front wheel drive Prelude, lowered, but on all-season tires. :eekdance: My friends from NYC thought it was a bright idea to rent a mustang for their drive to the mountains  Well, at least we all made it in one piece :bowrofl: |

^^ if he has the sports package, the rims won't clear the calipers
BUT if you look hard enough, you will find some 18's that fit with the BBK's |
Are you sure they wont? I've seen pics of other 18's clearing the brakes so far (nismo's for example). On the 350z, every wheel offered by nissan would clear any OEM brake system.
|
The only problem is that a separate set of rims probably wouldn't be worth it here in VA simply because whether we get enough snow to disrupt travels in any given winter is kind of up in the air. We either do or we don't, and lately it's been more don't than do.
If I could get some performance all-seasons to replace the high-performance summers that would be an option I'd consider. I will likely never track this car so a little hit in performance won't bother me all too much. How do these summers perform in wet weather, anyways? And on the other end of the spectrum, how to the snow tires perform in dry conditions? |
Good questions. Fortunately I may be keeping my current Subaru Outback 2.5 XT Limited for snow and rain duty, with the 370Z as my daily-driver. Wife will kindly take the Outback ;o)

Alexandria, awesome. So you know how it is, then! I live down in Woodbridge right now, moving to Fairfax in the next couple of months.

on the G's.....it did not fit at all with the 18's and the G has the same BBk's as the new Z's someone has to try it and see though |
I live in the desert and still have to deal with the snow. :( Stupid Reno being so close to the mountains. I drive a 92 Camaro for the snow with a good set of studded tires and have no problems at all even on ice but I keep it really slow and put weight in the trunk. If any of you can help it I would never drive the 370Z in the snow it's a sports car not a rally car.
