Snow tires FTW.

It is comparable because of the rear wheel drive but the Z has quite a bit more torque.
So the mustang is a mild version......LOL

thats why i love where i live! CALIFORNIA!

That's why I have a 4x4 Dodge Ram 1500 too! I have driven in the ice at least a dozen times and it did okay as long as I went slow.

My 370Z will be my only car so I will probably have to either put some all-seasons on it or get some base rims and put winter tires on them.

I owned a Mustang GT with more power and torque than the 370 and it was just fine in the snow (with all-seasons). Just had to be very careful.

Of course the best thing to do will be to just avoid driving in the snow. But we all know that's not always possible.

I'm in the same boat with you. Z will be my only car. And on top of that, it's my first rear wheel drive. But I say you can drive anything, just have to be careful; and of course, the all-seasons go without saying. Hoping to get through the rest of this winter without much snow, and then probably put all-seasons on for next winter.

A few years ago I drove 200 miles through a snowstorm in VA. Half the drive was through the mountains. I survived the highways by following in the tracks of 18 wheelers (going about 35mph max). When I exited the highway I was all alone on unlit roads with 4-5" of snow. It was tough and I thought I was going to slide off and crash a couple of times, but I made it home in one piece. The tires I had on the car at the time were stock Goodyear Eagles... 245 width. The car was making about 350hp at that time and I was running a 4.10 gear (stock is 3.27).

Came of a mountain, in the PA Poconos, at the end of the day snowboarding last winter. It had started to snow in the last hour of us being on the mountain, and by the time we left, there were at least a few inches on the ground. Drove to the nearest bar to get some food and then had surprisingly lengthy, probably 25 mile drive to our hotel, all the while the snow kept coming down.

I was in my front wheel drive Prelude, lowered, but on all-season tires. :eekdance: My friends from NYC thought it was a bright idea to rent a mustang for their drive to the mountains  Well, at least we all made it in one piece :bowrofl:

Your best bet is to get a set of the stock 18's and buy dedicated snow tires, this way you have no compromises of a true winter tire and true summer tire. An all-season, while cheaper, is going to dumb down the performance in all aspects, especially summer.

nogoodname 02-16-2009 08:39 PM

^^ if he has the sports package, the rims won't clear the calipers

BUT if you look hard enough, you will find some 18's that fit with the BBK's

ArtVandaleigh 02-16-2009 08:45 PM

Are you sure they wont? I've seen pics of other 18's clearing the brakes so far (nismo's for example). On the 350z, every wheel offered by nissan would clear any OEM brake system.

m4a1mustang 02-16-2009 09:07 PM

The only problem is that a separate set of rims probably wouldn't be worth it here in VA simply because whether we get enough snow to disrupt travels in any given winter is kind of up in the air. We either do or we don't, and lately it's been more don't than do.

If I could get some performance all-seasons to replace the high-performance summers that would be an option I'd consider. I will likely never track this car so a little hit in performance won't bother me all too much.

How do these summers perform in wet weather, anyways? And on the other end of the spectrum, how to the snow tires perform in dry conditions?

Good questions. Fortunately I may be keeping my current Subaru Outback 2.5 XT Limited for snow and rain duty, with the 370Z as my daily-driver. Wife will kindly take the Outback ;o)

Alexandria, awesome. So you know how it is, then! I live down in Woodbridge right now, moving to Fairfax in the next couple of months.

the BBK in the sport package is big...lol

on the G's.....it did not fit at all with the 18's

and the G has the same BBk's as the new Z's

someone has to try it and see though
