Squeeks and Rust?
I've owned my Z for about six months now and I drove it in the rain for less than 100 miles. The Z is always garaged and has 4300 miles on it and it has a good amount of surface rust on the exhaust where it attaches to the mid pipe, looks like crap from behind. Anyone else experiencing this?
Also, my drivers seat side bolsters squeek when when I rock back and fourth, driving me nuts. I'm just wondering if I can get the dealer to replace them. Other than that the car is the shizzle. Replaced my 2001 Mustang Bullitt which had a forged motor and SC, putting out around 500 hp. Don't miss it a bit. ;) |
I notice my suspension is a bit squeaky when I get in and out of the car, no problem with rust though, well I guess it doesnt rain much out here in the desert...

I wouldn't worry about the rust. Exposed metal+Water= rust. I assume when you say rust you arre just talking about on the surface, and not rotted all the way through.
|
Rust-through can obviously start out as surface rust. Odds that its a problem are low, but keep in mind that Toyota is recalling trucks with rusted through frames, so it can happen. This is something to watch over time.
I can see the rust on the exhaust from behind as I approach my garage driving the daily commuter. My driveway slopes away from the garage a bit, so I get a good low look at the Z's backside every day. |
Use a metal brush to clean the rust off then spray with rustoleum!
|
It's just surface rust and the point is that I own a 2003 Murano that is parked outside and has been for years and there is absolutely no rust on the exhaust until you get to the headers. I thought the exhaust from the headers back on the Z were Stainless, are they not?
Like I said it's surface rust but it's pretty thick and it looks like crap because you can clearly see it from behind. I'm dissapointed really, a $40K care and the exposed portion of the exhaust rusts like it does. |

You'd have to paint with a high-temp paint. Though I believe Rustoleum has one. You can even find "crinkle" high-temp paint if that's the look you want. |
I had the same squeak in the left side of mine for first 400 miles. I was ready to take it back for a fix. I found, that when my seat was back as far as possible and the back reclined a bit, the bottom of seat back was rubbing the plastic trim behind seat when I sat in the seat. I moved seat forward a bit and problem fixed. While in your seat reach behind and and see if the leather is rubbing against the plastic.

Not sure how many are aware of the surface rust that can be pick up from our national highways, aka "graderdust".
A few years back my Titan started to show rust spots on the paint surface, needless to say I was upset an confronted the Nissan Dealership. To my surprise they said it wasn't Nissans paint job , it was a result of "graderdust"-when the roads are plowed during winter conditions the grader blade leaves small filings (ever notice sparks coming off blades ?)of metal that are left on the roads. When we drive over or past other vehicles the dust is thrown up on the sides and undercarriages of our cars/trucks.Those small filings if not removed right away can imbed into the wax/clear coats an begin to rust on the surface of paint an chrome. My dealer told me to get my vehicle detailed with a process know as a acid wash , then rewaxed . Side note: Mid Apr my 40th AnnE arrives , cant wait to drive it ,an as to a lil purple in the paint who the hell cares OMG its a 370Z.it could be passion pink an it would still be cool...OMG its a 370Z!!!! |
first thing i did was cleaned the exhaust flange and painted it with matte black duplicolor engine enamel. looks perfect from the rear. :p

Buyer be ware that even many aftermarket exhausts claim they are "stainless steel" but are made from varying grades of SS that will still surface rust.
For example, the Stillen CBE is all 'stainless' but the muffler and tips are 306 SS which won't surface rust while all the piping is 409 and will most definitely surface rust. Caveat is that Stillen has a lifetime warranty on perforation, so it's not worth worrying about. And with their exhaust, you can only see the 306 parts, so you'll never see rust unless you wiggle under the car. |
I am about ready to take my '09 in for service as it definitely has a squeak in the rear suspension. I hear a metallic creak sometimes when getting in or out of the car. Others have mentioned this, it's not the seat creaking but sounds like it's coming from around the rear wheel opening so maybe a shock or spring ?

While I do not know the composition of the wax removing compound I would assume its not Sulfuric Acid (btw the correct spelling )which would be far too corrosive. My Titan is white, an shows rust very plainly (small pin prick sized specks of rust)that results after 4 months of winter driving ,the 'grader dust' is not in the paint or clear coat but embedded in the wax, every spring I take my truck in an have the wax removed and rebuffed an waxed professionally, the paint which looks new an NO rust at all after 5 years of Canadian winters. And I see your 40 years an raise yours too 42 years of driving, and I had never heard of it either until it was pointed out to me by a very good Dealership in southern British Columbia and a detail shop that explained how these small specs of rust can spread from a small metal filings off a grader blade to all out body rust from ignorance of a piece of knowledge someone was kind enough to inform me about before it resulted in major body rust, how else can you explain chrome rusting with out a catalyst? There is an old adage about Old dogs an new tricks, keep an open mind , and maybe go outside an look very carefully at your paint specially the driver side where mud an snow and the other crap that splashes up from other cars passing you on the highways you may be surprised, or need a new pair of bifocals. If you would like the shop that details my truck an bike,I'll be more then happy to give you their name,or perhaps you can spend $300 an get your vehicle detail an ask your detailing shop a little more about this subject. Google is an amazing tool try it sometime before you lol @ something ,ignorance is no excuse to quote a smRt man. http://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-s...rake-dust.html http://www.plowsite.com/showthread.php?p=501151 |

What because some douchebag posted on Club Lexus and the plowsite it's not a complete fabrication? Give me a break, that tiny piece of steel that makes a brief spark does not stay floating around in the air for minutes or hours until we drive along hitting them. I suppose if you could get your car within half inch of the plow there might be something to that BS story. :gtfo2: By the way I posted in the CL thead too, been a member there since 2006. |

The small filings of metal wouldn't float in the air ... a little thing called gravity would pull it to the earth to mix with slush/snow/water,perhaps you should have spent a little more time in physics class an less time in photoshop.<trolled>

LMAO @ the noob!!! Okay, I want to make sure I get this right.........So these microscopic bits of steel mix with the water and snow, stay there on the road, in place, as hundreds to hundreds of thousands of other cars precede me; then the little microscopic bits get sprayed on my car and I get little rust spots? :rofl2: I think you should spend less time in fantasy writing and more time in non-fiction. Thanks for playing though. :tiphat: |
