Yes you can shift to first gear. Take a look at this video:
Start watching from 3:47 if you don't want to watch the whole video. Tiff Needell will shift from 2nd to 1st. I personally avoid this with the Z because there no need for it. I do it if I am slowing down to like 3 -5 MPH (or if I need rapid acceleration).
