I don't think it matters at all. When it comes to specialty cars I don't think anyone gives a flying **** about depreciation or cost of ownership. We very rarely cross-shop to begin with. If you want a 911, you're going to get one. If you want a Z... you're going to get it.

I looked at Vettes and Caymans, but let's be serious, I knew I wanted the 370Z from the get go.

yah, i dont think it really matters and who cares if the other car depreciates more.

when you start talking about 'value' you start sounding cheap like some discount store and all the idiots doing those stupid commercials. 'i bought a 4 door kia, it's the exact same thing as a mercedes and yet they paid so much more. FTL!'

yeah if you can afford the 911 its easy to keep up with the costs just like its easy for us to keep up with the z we dont sit around and say SH*# i lost 50 grand on my car this year

FYI, used Porsches are not much more than a new Nissan Z. Used Cayman-S can be seen in the mid-30's. 911 SC, Carreras, 996s are in the 15-25K. 993s, though older than 996s are in 25-35K range. So, if you are thinking about a Porschew, they could be had!!!!

Warning: If you do not work on cars, stay with your Z. You can never afford the maintenance on a Porsche.

Who the hell factors in Opportunity Costs into the TCO of a (sports) car? At that point, you should just buy two used beaters and drive those until the wheels fall off.

Anyway, they really need to break these figures down into actual and conditional costs. Who cares about the depreciation of an asset unless you're going to sell or collect insurance on it? Things such as fuel costs and insurance are far more significant to the average owner than depreciation and opportunity costs. If you compare just actual costs, the Porsche doesn't seem that much more expensive to operate than the Z.

Make fun of "value", but it does matter. I consider price per mile for a vehicle to be a valid measure of its worth. With the Z, I'm willing to pay a higher price per mile because I get more enjoyment per mile. For a commuter car or my pickup, I won't pay as much. My motorcycle actually cost more per mile than my truck because of higher and more frequent maintenance costs.
