Hey guys any recommendations on a radar detector? I'm looking at the Valentine One or custom install K40. I heard the new Escort is pretty good too.

You have the GPS one? I have the older X50 I think, it works fine but losing all the false alerts would be nice.

+1 on Valentine One. Two sensors and arrows are great. Had my unit for almost 6 years now.

Only worry is hand-held laser units are becoming more popular with the police. By the time most radar detectors give you an alarm, the police have you speed.

One more vote for Valentine One. I have been using it almost 10 years. I don't drive without it.

The V1 is great. Had it for over 5 years.

I like my 9500 better though. Eliminating the false alerts around the areas you always drive by is real nice. No beeps unless it is a real cop on your normal routes after you block out the false ones. Miss the arrow but you learn the direction by the sound. I did have to send it back to get an upgrade since I was getting false laser alerts from laser cruise controls and other new stuff. It was an early model with the original software.

Can not go wrong with the V1, K40 or Escort. I would stick with one of those three though. Cheap ones are real annoying with all of the false alerts.

I've been reading reviews on the passport versus the V1 for a long time, and the passport always wins. Here is the latest comparison. I've owned a couple of the passports over the last few years, and they have never let me down, while I think the v1 is a little slow to update.

I have nothing against the Passport (the GPS feature sounds great for those that don't commute between a sparsely-populated mountain and a desert as I do) but I have to say, my V1 is a cherished possession. It's saved my butt about ten times a year, no lie.

Hi all... Just bought the BEL GX65. It is a GPS detector and in my opinion is the best on the market. If you drive similar routes every day it is far superior to any other, even the valentine one. There are NO false alerts....plus notifies you of red light cameras... highly recommended

I never drive anywhere without my Valentine V1......also use Photo Blocker on my plates.........I have been driving almost 48 years.....not one speeding ticket.......but with the V-1 I have started driving way too fast....it saves me all the time..........

Actually, I shouldn't call it junk. I would say it's a FAR third place from the other two being discussed, which is not just my opinion, but it always comes up third on the testing sites for false alarms and low range

for me... the lock out feature on the 9500I is worth the small difference..

Valentine one, been driving with it for over a year, has saved me many times on the highway. The arrows really help to tell you if they are coming up from the front or behind. The false alarms kinda suck, b/c there are a lot of store door openers on my route, but I've got use to hitting the mute button, not such a big deal.

Buying any detector today without GPS capability is akin to buying an old-style 3lb cell phone (you know the kind that looked a bit like the old WWII style walkie-talkies).

GPS technology allows you to mark (and then be reminded of) red-light camera locations...the brand new units even come with known red-light camera locations already pre-programed into the units.

Also, the Passport (and I suspect the other GPS equipped units) adjust sensitivity based on your vehicle's speed which helps filter out false alarms.

Speaking of false alarms, the Valentine seems to have no ability to filter out false alarms from automatic door openers and the like which is curious since even though they operate on the same radar ban as police radar; they actually operate on a slightly different frequency within the band so I don't understand why Valentine doesn't filter them on that basis.

I admit that I liked knowing from what direction the signal was coming from (from the Valentine) but it has nothing to do with sensitivity/range and experience will teach you how to recognize a signal from the rear anyway. Also, while a LEO coming from behind can pace you and therefore have a basis for issuing a citation; radar can't actually compute your speed - all it's good for at that point is an accurate gauge for the officer to know how fast he's going.

Any of the top detectors (in terms of range/performance in detecting the radar bands/laser) will give more than adequate warning to the driver (assuming your speed isn't ridiculous compared to the posted limit). That being the case, other features become more important...the GPS capability and the ability to filter out false alarms being two very important ones for me.

That's why you buy a Blinder Extreme M-25 ( 2sensors ) or M-45( 4 sensors ) jammming system like I did!! The Laser Park Pro is supposed to be even better.


BTW: If you already have a V-1 and want GPS "marking" of red-light camera locations a NAVALERT is a nice addidtion.

^^^ how do you like the blinder? That's what I was going to get. But I can't figure out where to mouth the back two on the 370.

So far I haven't been alerted to any laser hits so it's hard to say. My 350Z has the Blinder Extreme M-25 ( 2 sensors). Both of the sensors have been mounted in the bumper (aftermarket). I may get the additional sensors for the rear, I would mount just one under the top part of the license frame.

My research has shown the Laser Park Pro may be a better unit, but it's alot more expensive. Take a look at the chart I included in my previous post for comparison.

Actually, Passport owns Beltronics and is selling a lot of the same products in different casings. Beltronics in it's current form is a very good line. Previously, they sucked. That's how Passport managed the buyout. ;)
